FAIRBANKS -- Conoco Phillips plans to cut its corporate giving in 2009.Conoco gave about $13 million to Alaska charities last year, said spokeswoman Natalie Lowman. That figure could drop to $9 million this year, she said.

Citing difficulties in the world economy, the company announced this month that it is opting out of a decade-old agreement it signed with the state in 1999. According to the company, the agreement expired this year.

Sam Kirstein, director of the Fairbanks Community Food Bank, said her organization has received $10,000 a year for the past several years from Conoco. The money pays to distribute free food that arrives through a U.S. Department of Agriculture program.

Conoco is the only cash donor to the program, which helps about 500 households, Kirstein said. If the money disappears, she said, employees will "do our best" to continue but there is no guarantee the food bank would survive.
