Politico puts Michelle Obama on a list of 'Frenemies' to the White House

According to Feministe:

http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2009/01/23/michelle-obama-baracks-frenemy/

At Politico, Glenn Thrush has made a list of “Frenemies” to the White House — Democrats who could cause Barack Obama some serious problems. The last person on the list? His own wife:

10. Michelle Obama — She’s glamorous, she’s on message, she’s the nation’s favorite mom — and now she has nowhere to go but down. The press, which helped savage Michelle Obama for her “proud of my country” remark during the campaign, has since built her into a 21st century Jackie O. With the spotlight shining so brightly on her now, any misstep by the first lady — a slip of the tongue, a too-frank statement, any disagreement with the administration’s positions — could reflect harshly on her husband.

Right, and I’m sure that anything Barack does that pisses us off — like say, refusing to overturn the Global Gag Rule on Roe Day because he wants to take the emotions out of whether or not thousands and thousands of women die (oh yeah, argue with me all you want, but I’m bitter) — will leave us all looking in Michelle’s direction saying “oooh, who did you marry?” Yes?

No? What do you mean? Are you saying that it’s only Michelle’s own actions that reflect on her? What a novel concept. And one that many apparently think doesn’t apply in reverse.

This “what your spouse does automatically reflects on you” nonsense has to end, across the board. And especially in situations like this.

I’m with Michelle Obama Watch:

So in otherwords, Michelle Obama had better be PERFECT for the next four years or its open season by unhinged “journalists.” What else is new.

This sounds so much like the New York Times and their “Michelle is TOO Strong” meme. With all due respect to the geniuses at Politico.com this sounds very much like a self-fufilling prophecy.

Not, I’m sure, that this is the last we’ll see of such drivel about a First Lady who isn’t afarid to share her own thoughts, and refuses to purposely fade into the wallpaper. Women using their brains? What an embarassment to their husbands!

3. Everything old is new again...
But she needs to think before she speaks a bit more often. This has happened to a LOT of 'first ladies'.

ER: Ain't THAT the truth!

4. I wouldn't be surprised
if she makes it through 4 years without a "misstep". She impresses me as the kind of person who only makes a mistake once. She saw how the press behaved when she was "too-frank" so now she knows how to deal with them.

5. I think that might be the case.
And I don't read Politico either. I'll pick up the paper version for free here in DC.

7. Did Hillary Clinton not just take flack for Bill's mistakes?
Hell, did Obama not just take flack for Biden's joke?

The moral of the story is that the misdeeds of a surrogate, regardless of gender, will reflect upon the highest ranking active politician available, and that's really all there is to it folks. It ain't fair, but if fairness counted, we would've just sent former President Al Gore back home to Tennessee.

8. The Jackals of Journalism would rather rip and tear than leave
their comfortable office and cover a story like Tennessee. I don't watch. The internet is enough for me.

11. As far as I'm concerned
Politico can eat a bag of shit. They provided an untold wealth of fodder that was used divisively against us during the campaign season. They are persona non grata in my book.
