in the ointment. She provided them only to Paterson but when it was discovered they are subject to the Freedom of Information Act, she withdrew. Bloomberg had exempted her. I think she wants to stay private.

26. Afraid not, she's pledged to support the pick if they're running for reelection.
I preferred Caroline too, but Gillibrand is a pretty good second choice, actually.

13. BIO: Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.
Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

Office: Elected to Congress in 2006

Birthdate: Dec. 9, 1966, in Albany, N.Y.

Residence: Hudson, N.Y.

Education: Graduated from Dartmouth College in 1988, and U.C.L.A. in 1991.

Religion: Catholic

Marital Status: Married (Jonathan).

Professional Career: Practicing attorney, 1991-2006; special counsel, HUD, 2000.

Committees: Agriculture (18th of 25 D): Livestock, Dairy & Poultry; Horticulture & Organic Agriculture; Conservation, Credit, Energy & Research. Armed Services (28th of 34 D): Seapower & Expeditionary Forces; Terrorism, Unconventional Threats & Capabilities.

Gillibrand is the daughter of Douglas Rutnik, an Albany lobbyist who is part of former Gov. George Pataki's inner circle. Her grandmother was a prominent Democratic activist in Albany who brought Gillibrand along with her on the campaign trail.

Gillibrand served as a law clerk at the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals.

Gillibrand traveled widely, working one summer for Republican Sen. Alfonse D'Amato

After law school Gillibrand served briefly as special counsel under Housing and Urban Development Secretary Andrew Cuomo, before going to work for a major New York City law firm.

Gillibrand scored one of the big upsets of the 2006 elections when she defeated incumbent GOP Rep. John Sweeney for New York's 20th District seat. The critical moment in the campaign came shortly before Election Day, when a leaked police report showed Sweeney's wife had called 911 in what appeared to be a domestic violence incident.

23. Well, my first impression is that she is a place holder
and she will be challenged in 2010. I hadn't heard her and
knew nothing about her until the pick.

This was a pick that Paterson did for personal political purposes
for the state of New York

Sort of like Joe Biden's seat.

24. except Kaufman worked for Biden and declared he wouldn't run
so Kaufman is pretty much going to vote the way Biden would and keep the same staff.

She is much younger and ambitious. I don't think she would have given up her House seat unless she really wanted the Senate seat and will fight for it.

27. Furious campaigner I heard
Anyway, it seems like New York Politics is gonna be lively
in the coming years. She mentioned tax cuts and budget too often in her speech
for my taste, although I know she is progressive on other issues.

I still think she will get a strong democratic challenger in 2010.

Good Luck New York

which concerns me. She really didn't talk much about policy.

25. Did you look at her vote results? Placeholder until 2040!
She is young enough to be a incumbent Senator in NY until she decides to retire decades from now.

I liked her record on a lot of points.

I don't see her as any worse or better than
all the other governors' picks so far.

19. Yes, and I know it's not her fault but the pitch of her voice is WAY too high.
If she answered the phone, I'd ask, "Little girl, is your Mommy home?" :eyes:

20. I understand you dislike her policy positions, and I have a lot of questions, but why stoop
to personal attacks? Would you attack a man for having too deep a voice?

I'm so pleased that he wants someone Republicans will vote for. How about someone Democrats will vote for?

28. Am in right in assuming that HC had a big say
in who was not chosen and who was chosen. I mean the new Senator mentioned Clinton's name several times.
Further the Kennedy's were big time Obama supporters - anyone but....?

34. I do wish it was clearly the Governor's choice as opposed to all the rumors and influence
and all this mess. At least if it was clearly, well, Paterson figured it out based on what he thought would be best for NY. Instead, we'll probably never know all the backroom calculations about pleasing other politicians and planning for future elections.
