I am writing to you not just as a fellow citizen, but also as the mother of two small children. They are twins – a boy and a girl – and nearly two years old. They are the joy of my life. It was watching them sleep (a blessed time!) that compelled me to write to you.
I want you to prosecute the people who lied us into war. I am convinced, cynically perhaps, that it was not done for altruistic reasons, and a ‘follow the money’ strategy will lead you to those who believed the men and women of our armed services could be used as pawns in their nefararious schemes. I would like those who did this prosecuted, and their assets seized as proceeds from illegal activity, similar to the way we go after drug dealers.
I am not sure if you have ever watched a television show called “The Sopranos,” but the lead character is a mobster. He commits atrocious crimes, and then returns to the bosom of his loving family where he deals with his ‘real’ life. His family benefits financially, and he is able to justify his actions because of this. I believe you will find a similar mentality in those who committed the acts of villainy that have cost all of us so dearly.
I do not think there is any crime greater than taking a country into an unjust war. It is treason at a level that leaves me near trembling. I value the men and women of our armed services; once, another woman watched over their sleep, just as I watch my own children, and for them to die so another man might serve greed is a wrong so great I am surprised the dead do not rise from their graves in outrage. It meant someone who was trusted with the authority to guard and protect this country took our best and our bravest, and made them something unspeakable: Expendable.
I am not the mother of a member of our armed forces, nor am I citizen of the country invaded on a pretext. I am however, the mother of two children, and they are bright. For their sakes, I cannot allow a future holder of your office to believe corruption at this level will go unpunished, or that the rewards outweigh the risks.
Dante said traitors had their own special place in Hell, and I have no doubt Judas Iscariot would bear good company with those who sold us into war for thirty pieces of silver. Personally, I can think of no greater hell than the suffering of the families who have provided their children for honorable service to this country, trusting they would be safeguarded and used with care, only to watch their oaths abused, and their children returned shattered or in burial clothes. I think of the mother whose child sleeps forever, the potential for greatness destroyed, and the loss of those whose parents won’t watch them grow and I think, THAT COULD BE ME OR MINE.
The dead sleep. It is the living who must demand justice. On behalf of the men, women and children who are already residing in Hell on Earth because of these actions, I join in the chorus of voices demanding prosecution of the members of the previous administration.
Respectfully, Ida M. Briggs
