Barack's Gift to the Talibornagains
Via White House press release, President Obama's statement on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade:

On the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we are reminded that this decision not only protects women’s health and reproductive freedom, but stands for a broader principle: that government should not intrude on our most private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose.

While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue, no matter what our views, we are united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, reduce the need for abortion, and support women and families in the choices they make. To accomplish these goals, we must work to find common ground to expand access to affordable contraception, accurate health information, and preventative services.

On this anniversary, we must also recommit ourselves more broadly to ensuring that our daughters have the same rights and opportunities as our sons: the chance to attain a world-class education; to have fulfilling careers in any industry; to be treated fairly and paid equally for their work; and to have no limits on their dreams. That is what I want for women everywhere.

6. Why do you say it's a 'gift' to them? For attack? OR
Maybe they (or at least a lot of the ladies) are breathing a huge collective sigh of relief? (in which case, it IS a 'gift')

8. Sorry, forgot the sarcasm icon
I was being sarcastic. It was a gift to US, not to them!

12. A gift to all.....
and there is no one on this planet who takes abortion 'lightly'.

Preventing unintended pregnancies is KEY to ending abortions (nobody WANTS to have an abortion).

Contraception is key (and, NO ~ easy access to contraceptives does NOT foster greater promiscuity among teenagers (or adults).

13. Don't abortions usually go down under democrats?
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 10:56 PM by FatDave
Aren't a fair number of abortions tied to the economy? I know I sure couldn't afford a new baby right now. And then there's the whole birth control and sex ed stuff.

17. His last paragraph here--SO powerful!!

20. Not what he said or meant at all
Some of Obama's strongest supporters are seamless garment/consistent life ethic Catholic Democrats. Tim Kaine and Bob Casey are the two most prominent examples. Obama's committment to finding common ground with pro-life progressives and moderates is a welcome change from the polarizing name-calling that frequently infects any discussion of this issue.

Obama's words weren't directed towards the Christian Right. They were directed towards the Catholic Left.
