19. 5 Repukes flipped
Collins (R-ME)
Hutchison (R-TX)
Murkowski (R-AK)
Snowe (R-ME)
Specter (R-PA)

The age of Repuke Obstructionism looks like it may be coming to a close.

12. Good to hear....
I brought this up the other day.

"Two important bills affecting worker rights are coming before Congress: The H-1B and L-1 Visa Fraud and Abuse Prevention Act and the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x418655

Anyone know when they'll be voting on "The H-1B and L-1 Visa Fraud and Abuse Prevention Act?"

27. The repubs hate trial lawyers
Their so-called reason for voting against it was that the evil "trial lawyers" would sue. It's a load of crap.

Heaven forbid that women who were discriminated against try to recover what damages they can.

24. Didn't remove the caps on damages for Title VII claims.
Edited on Thu Jan-22-09 09:52 PM by Laelth
I've read the act (and I practice law as an employment attorney working for Plaintiffs), and, in my humble opinion, this law is little more than a symbolic gesture. It does not address the real problems with Title VII. It does alter, somewhat, the legislatively-imposed (and completely unnecessary) statute of limitations, and that's good, of course, but there's much more that needs to be fixed in Title VII.

On the other hand, the changes in EEOC policy that this law mandates may actually do some good. Employers may be less inclined to discriminate when they know that the EEOC must collect all this wage data.

30. Nice going, Barb. You fought like the tiger you are.
Some on the right were clearly mocking the bill and trying to pass amendments that had nothing at all to do with "equal pay". They failed. You scolded them firmly while managing to keep your composure. Big feather in your cap.
