President Obama - its long overdue. Hope and anger from NW Ohio
In less than 7 hours we will have a new Democratic president. The slow march into the depths of fascism will be over and we will begin to take our country back from the robber barons.

4200+ American military personal have died and over 20,000 injured and maimed in *bush wars whose sole purpose was to make rich men richer and to feed the military-industrial pig. When Cheney became VP he was worth 20 million dollars, now he's worth much, much more. No word on the worth of *bush's "trust". We can only guess.

Soldiers on combat duty are forced to do multiple tours in combat zones - anywhere from 2 to 8 tours. That has never happened in the history of this great nation - its always been 1 or 2 combat tours until a few years ago under *bush; any more than that and it was volunteers only. Its strictly a *bush administration construct because they were too cowardly to either GTFO or institute a draft. They didn't shit and they didn't get off the pot - they just passed gas and used our soldiers for toilet paper - over and over. Many of those young Americans will become mentally unbalanced or imprisoned by the time they are 30. Some are already.

83 of the top 100 publicly traded corporations, and ALL the corporations who received bailouts have multiple accounts in over-seas tax shelters. Maybe most of the public money they received is hidden now - the banks are not lending it like they were supposed to because the *bush administration failed to regulate them. Citigroup alone has set up 427 tax haven subsidiaries to conduct its business, including 91 in Luxembourg, 90 in the Cayman Islands and 35 in the British Virgin Islands according to the Washington Post.

If the unemployment rate was still calculated in the same way as it was before the mid-sixties it would be over 17% now; the average unemployment rate during the great depression was around 25%.

Living here in the reddest area of northwest Ohio, most of my friends are republican and for some reason I am furious at them now more than ever. The big event is less than 7 hours away and my anger is all I can think about. My mind cant grasp that much illogical thinking from so many really very nice people who vote republican just because their fathers did - and thats the only reason. It makes me think of how the German population must have gradually sunk into fascism before WW2 - they were probably nice people too, for the most part, until they were engulfed in irrational fears and the lies that were used to counter them.

If I don't grab onto hope right now all I have left is revenge and hate. That never works and it takes up too much energy and time. I don't want that but I do demand justice for those who have looted our treasury and orchestrated the murder of our young soldiers. And let us not forget that anywhere between 150,000 and 1 million Iraqis and Afghans, a good many of them noncombatants and especially children, were murdered by those who would claim to represent who we are and then lie that it was in our best interests. I weep for those who were duped into believing them. The weak and fearful who now recognize the lies told to them deserve forgiveness but I don't believe any ally or enemy, friend or foe - even remotely involved in THE tragic failure of a generation will forgive the United States of America - not this time.

You and I, and indeed all Americans share this burden that was thrust upon us and its sole purpose - to militarize further and to continue feeding the military-industrial pig. We have been forced into it - and that will be *bush's legacy.

In President Obama I believe that we have selected the best person to lead us during these trying times. He has his work cut out for him and I feel that he is up for the job. I sincerely hope that we can eventually demilitarize but the die has been cast against it. Again. This time by a traitorous buffoon whose sole purpose became clear very early on - to jam the gears and loot the treasury. And that, sadly, is America's legacy.

5. I recognize myself in much of your post, including the anger.
I can't believe what has happened to my country, and to the world, these past eight years... all the freakin damage they've done.

Thank you for putting your thoughts together and sharing them here.

... and welcome to DU!

7. Sodium, we think alike, you and I.
The right wing media will continue to paint Bush and his ilk as the great friend of the military. And your red friends will continue to believe it, just as mine do in the S.E. corner of Ohio. And this is the real tragedy in America. Like you, I have never felt more anger toward these wrong headed koolaid drinkers.

9. I live in a rural area
This is a smalltown farming/manufacturing community and in general its a pretty nice place to live but its very very republican. I know people who are laid off (for good) yet rant about how unions are evil. Its jaw-dropping unbelievable! And for me very sad. And after a while its like talking to a post. I gave up for a long time. I'm retooling.

Thanks again. I think we need this edge right now its good for America - and I needed to rant.

11. Jaw-dropping unbelievable is right.
These people have no idea what this country was like before organized labor gained some influence. And they have no idea what they are in for once this influence is gone. I hear anti-labor sentiment everywhere I turn, even on the DU.

8. Welcom from NE Ohio
I am still angry over here too, but more hopeful. It is us who will have to change things, not the brain dead "nice people"....they really aren't nice. Yes they include family and people I now hesitate to call friends - it is "nice people" like them who have enabled the near collapse of this country. It is "nice people" who let their churches tell them it is ok to hate people for who they are.

12. You are so correct.
I lost a life long friendship over this past election. I can no longer tolerate the koolaid drinking, bigoted, unthinking Republican.

16. It is something we have to do.
If these people embrace an ideology based on criminal behavior and lies, and refuse to see another point of view, they are lost. This is not a sporting event, the outcome is too serious to root for the bad guys yet expect good results for our nation.

10. a friend told me yesterday that I had been angry for the past several years..
after I told him that perhaps we would not have made this giant leap forward if it hadnt been for 8 years of brutal terror by bush...my response...we wouldnt be here if people like me hadnt been outraged...silenced...considered fringe...even in 2003 when we marched against this stupid war, hundreds of thousands in sf were reported as tens of thousands...I'm a boomer and a little set in my ways..but I learn from Obama...agree to disagree...no drama...persevere...I share your thoughts...I just have more faith and hope than available for a very long time...
