Segregated Florida
June 26th, 2008

An up-and-coming young (at the time) magician named James Randi comes face to face with segregated Florida in the early 1960s. Also, hear about Randi’s travels over the past month.

Also, here is the link to the Randi portrait taken by internationally beloved technology pundit Andy Ihnatko and mentioned at the beginning of the podcast.

3. I grew up in South Florida in the '50s and '60s.
And I remember segregation well. Blacks had separate bathrooms and water fountains, had to sit at the back of the bus, and were not allowed into any white restaurants or movie theaters. And I attended segregated schools during elementary and high school years.

4. I was a child in south Florida during those days too -
It was the water fountains that were the most glairing examples of segregation for me. There would always be two of them, one with a White's Only sign above it and the second with a Colored sign above it.

Then there were the chain gangs clearing roadsides. White man with a shotgun, black men swinging blades.
