1. To show some respect for...
the people they are about to govern, I imagine.

2. I think it was symbolic of their honor.
They traveled across the country greeting the country on their way to office. It was a fitting last stop.

3. It's a tradition, symbolizing his taking on of the role of Commander in Chief.
The incoming presidents have usually done this as part of the inaugural events.

6. Didn't know it was a tradition - don't remember this fanfare for
a inaugural before - but maybe this is the first one I have cared about in a very long time Did not vote for the last three presidents

7. In the past, the coverage was focused on the inauguration itself.
Less attention to the other events. I think there are several reasons for that: the historic nature of this inauguration, the ties with MLK Day, and the strength of 24 hour cable news (which was around before, but not so full in its coverage). Some things, like the concert, weren't done before. But the ceremonial things--the wreath laying, the service at the National Cathedral--those things were done, but with less fanfare.

4. Because it's decent and respectful.
Yeah, something we haven't seen in president or VP in the last eight years. It'll take getting use to again.
