Was cruising youtube...
and found "California Dreaming" by the Mamas and the Papas. This song came out 3 years before I was born (1968), was still big enough to remember from my childhood, and- 40 years later, still sounds damn good:

38. I bought that album right around the time he died
Don't remember if it was before or after he died. But I remember listening to it as he was being mourned.

I also remember having to get up and skip over the Yoko songs. Every other song on the album was Yoko and her stuff so sucked compared to John's. So I would listen to a Lennon tune then get up and put the needle on the next Lennon tune. LOL

46. When CDs came out
First thing I thought of was that Lennon album and how I wished it had been in CD format so it would have been easier to skip over Yoko's crappy songs.

That woman is just NOT a musician. Nice lady but lousy musician. LOL

3. Yes. A good song, fer sure.
Seems to be one of those not-meant-to-ever-be-released-in-stereo early multi-track recordings.
Meant to be heard in mono only, in other words. Becomes bizarrely separated when played as if it was stereo.

....but I digress.

11. It is also one of those...
"never to be re-done by anyone else" songs. I saw a video where someone covered this on American Idol. Ruined it almost as much at Pontiac ruined the GTO name the one year they re-released it.

13. And also,
there seems to be a lot of songs from that era that should have never been messed with. A lot of good music (maybe just my opinion, I grew up with hippie parents :) ), then came disco.

40. And disco so sucked.
Except the Bee Gees stuff. LOL

I am married to a musician. Disco basically put him out of work because live music clubs switched to DJs and disco music. So we hated it. Still can't listen to a lot of it.

33. I received my draft notice a few days after Kent State.
Wonder what a 23-year-old kid would do today if he/she had just graduated from college, and the reward was a letter saying "Greetings". Most that I know give me this "deer in the headlights" look when I tell them about those days.

34. I fear...
that they would obey authority and go get killed like they were told to do. I was too young to know what the war protesters or the civil rights marchers went through, but I do admire what they have done. It took some stones (trying to remain gender neutral) to stand up against authority like that, even though you knew you were right.

but I was thinking about the inauguration in two days, and happier times came to my head. The 60's were about a hope for a better tomorrow, and ever since THEY have been trying to squash it out of us.

35. Ironically, there was hope back then that things might actually change.
When it became clear that they wouldn't, many lost their lust for activism. Many of us saw the handwriting on the wall. In the words of another tune played today, "Disappointment was my closest friend."

Great to have a reason to hope again...

They would break up, get back together to make an album and then break up again. It was a soap opera.

Sadly, Michelle Phillips is the only one still alive.

50. While perusing your youtube link and jumping around i found one of my favorites from my yute

This is a song I wish I could have heard live when it was contemporary.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVlbgqmxXNY

ARTIST: Traffic
TITLE: Low Spark of High Heeled Boys

If you see something that looks like a star
And it's shooting up out of the ground
And your head is spinning from a loud guitar
And you just can't escape from the sound
Don't worry too much, it'll happen to you
We were children once, playing with toys

And the thing that you're hearing is only the sound
Of the low spark of high-heeled boys

{Refrain}
The percentage you're paying is too high-priced
While you're living beyond all your means
And the man in the suit has just bought a new car
From the profit he's made on your dreams
But today you just read that the man was shot dead
By a gun that didn't make any noise
But it wasn't the bullet that laid him to rest
Was the low spark of high-heeled boys

If you had just a minute to breathe
And they granted you one final wish
Would you ask for something like another chance
Or something similar as this
Don't worry too much, it'll happen to you
As sure as your sorrows or joys

And the thing that disturbs you is only the sound
Of the low spark of high-heeled boys

{Refrain}

High-heeled boys

If I gave you everything that I owned
And asked for nothing in return
Would you do the same for me as I would for you
Or take me for a ride
And strip me of everything, including my pride
But spirit is something that no one destroys

And the sound that I'm hearing is only the sound
Of the low spark of high-heeled boys
Heeled boys
