Democrats unveil stimulus, and Republicans cry 'pork'
By Kevin G. Hall and David Lightman | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — Democrats in the House of Representatives unveiled their long-awaited economic stimulus plan on Thursday, proposing $275 billion in tax cuts and credits to jump-start the economy and $550 billion in spending for clean energy, road construction, social welfare programs and emergency assistance to states.

Thursday's rollout is the first step in what's sure to be a lively debate in the weeks ahead over the proposed $825 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Bill of 2009, the largest stimulus measure ever.

It was crafted with input from President-elect Barack Obama, but it differs in detail from some of his ideas. Obama was scheduled to appear at a factory in Ohio on Friday to talk up the need for stimulus legislation.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the package aims at "immediate job creation and continuing job creation," but House Republican Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, took one look and vowed to fight the plan.

"Oh my God," he said slowly as he described his immediate reaction. "I just can't tell you how shocked I am at what we're seeing . . . . Everything all these agencies want to do is in here. I don't know how this is going to stimulate the economy."

2. Yes, they are, as predicted. Comical when you think about the
last 8 years and how the deficit got this way to begin with.

4. It may not be perfect, but it creates jobs, expands food stamps,
extends unemployment, helps college students, provides job training, aids health care, etc. Boehner "shock" makes me like it all the more. I hope the final bill will shock the SOB into a heart attach. Soulless bastard.

Obama, Stimulus Proposals Enjoy Broad Backing in Poll

By LAURA MECKLER

WASHINGTON -- Americans support the economic-stimulus plan being pushed by President-elect Barack Obama but worry the government will spend too much money and widen the budget deficit, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found.

Overall, the poll found strong public backing for the stimulus plan and its major planks, particularly proposals to spend more federal money to create jobs.

As Mr. Obama prepares to take office next week, he enjoys enormous good will and higher approval ratings than his predecessors enjoyed upon entering the White House.

The poll found that the handful of problems Mr. Obama's transition has encountered have had little, if any, effect on his standing with the public. And even before the Illinois Democrat is sworn in as the nation's first African-American president, the poll found a large increase in the number of Americans who view race relations positively.

The survey of 1,007 adults was conducted Jan. 9-12 and has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
