Retired FDNY firefighter who stood with Bush amid the rubble at Ground Zero will be @ WH tonight

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dc/2009/01/bush-and-beckwith-together-aga.html

Retired FDNY firefighter Bob Beckwith, who stood with President Bush on a crushed fire engine amid the rubble at Ground Zero just a few day after 9/11, will be in attendance at the White House when the retiring President delivers his exit speech to the nation, the Daily News has learned.

Former Bush political guru Karl Rove asked Beckwith to climb onto the wreck and jump up and down to make sure it was safe for the President. As Bush climbed up, Beckwith started to climb down and Bush said to him, “Where are you going? You stay right here.”

With his arm around the veteran firefighter who had been retired for seven years, Bush gave his famous speech where he vowed to get the Al Qaeda thugs responsible for the carnage at the World Trade Center.

When someone at Ground Zero yelled they couldn’t hear him, Bush said into a bullhorn: “I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you, and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.”

Bush and Beckwith have stayed in touch since the attacks, even though Beckwith hasn’t always agreed on the President’s politics. He spent 29 years assigned to FDNY’s Ladder 164 firehouse in Queens.

1. Probably the height of Bush's administration.
Which is unfortunate for him, since it came within the first year.

From that point on, it was all down hill.
