1. That *is* amazing. What's the story behind it? Anyone?
Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 04:53 PM by Liberal_Lurker
Thanks for the update everyone. I wasted my afternoon watching Bubba Ho-Tep rather than staying on top of things. Oops.

7. Hit a flock of geese shortly after takeoff and lost both engines.
The pilot brought it down into the Hudson River. Amazing!

10. Commuter ferries rescued passengers.
Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 04:50 PM by Graybeard
There are ferries that run between Manhattan and NJ all day long. Within minutes they were at the scene rescuing passengers. Great work!

3. I am watching it on the tv and it is amazing.
This pilot deserves a lot of credit. It doesn't look like there was any loss of life and only minor injuries.

30. And not small birds...
geese. It takes a lot of bird to take engines out that quickly.

11. sci-fi channel will turn it into a shark movie, where you have drama
with people and plane for 1 hour and 55 minutes and 5 minutes of actual shark (probably an alien shark or one from a military lab) eating the plane (of course, the plane will have been brought down by terrorists who will get eaten by said sharks after they shoot a few people to make you hate them even more).

There, I wrote my first screen play for sci-fi, when do I get paid?

17. The hero in the story needs a catchy phrase
"Feeding Time!" Just as he (or she, if Jodie Foster/Sigourney Weaver/Angelina Jolie is cast) pushes the last terrorist into the shark infested water...(Cue inspirational music)

14. Yes it is. The plane went down right near where The Intrepid is docked.
Edited on Thu Jan-15-09 04:55 PM by BrklynLiberal
I believe that if it had to happen, it could not have been in a better place. Very smart pilot.

The last three pics here show the Intrepid in the foreground.

20. Can someone tell me why this happens. Shouldn't there be a ...
screen of some sort on the outer edges of the jet engines to prevent geese from flying into the engines inside.

I am not a scientist nor a mechanical engineer, but, is this not a reasonable question?

25. Turbines need unrestricted airflow
Although geese tend to restrict airflow quite well by themselves.

I had a similar idea for the foam that falls off the space shuttle, just wrap the tank in a big nylon stocking. :)

23. how many large planes have landed in water like that
without snapping in half or busting into flames! Airbus hurrah!

I've always wondered when flying if this is actually possible!

31. The credit belongs to the pilot...
Airbus airframes are no stronger than Boeing. It took real skill to put it down like that. Had to pull the nose up hard to drop the tail into the water to bring down the speed as much as possible before the engines hit the water. Had he hit wrong, or at too high a speed, the fuselage could of breeched, and it would have sunk at a much higher rate. And as someone else brought up- the full fuel tanks (in the wings) added bouyancy.
