The thing looks like it really survived the impact. Shallow water probably kept fires from starting. It's a miracle, though it's fucking cold out there.

Aircraft took off at 3.26 for Charlotte NC. Ft 1549. Looks like everyone got off before it began to sink.

If everything went fine, everyone would have been evacuated in a minute and a half, but it's possible that some people were unable to escape.

A reporter with New York One News saw the plane with flames coming out before it went into the river. Commuter ferries immediately went to it to rescue passengers.

Fred Buretta. Says engine blew out, pilot turned around, made a line for the river. says it was a phenomenal landing. After impact, people were very orderly. people made their way to the rafts alongside the fuselage. A few people went into the water but he thinks they all got out.

they were calm and insisted on women and children leaving the aircraft first.
That is unbelievable. A classy flight crew and classy passengers. What an amazing ditching.
The pilot was right - over land they would have all died...amazing judgement.
