Louisianna's Vitter sole holdout in 16-1 vote; full Senate now votes

WASHINGTON - The Senate Foreign Relations Committee endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton as as President-elect Barack Obama's new secretary of state.

The vote was 16-1, with only Louisianna Republican Sen. David Vitter voting against the confirmation.

The committee vote paves the way for a full Senate vote after Obama is sworn in Jan. 20.

Indications from both parties this week were that Clinton would win a near-unanimous vote Thursday in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
