I am commenting on an MSM site that has a story about gun sales & Repugs are claiming Obama is going to take their guns.

What I have so far

If law abiding gun owners aren't doing anything wrong why are they against closing the gun show loophole?

It is not the criminals we need to fear, as let's be honest here, as long as we are not smoking crack, selling crack, buying crack, or have not beenin in a relationship with a crazed stalker, we are unlikely to need lethal force to defend ourselves.

It is the crazies who you should fear, as their victims are random, often just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

And the crazies do get their weapons that shoot way too many rounds from gun shows.

2. Not to nitpick, but most mass killings are done with low-capacity weapons.
Usually pistols, most of which have clips under 10 in capacity. Mass murders have little to do with the number of available bullets, and much to do with the killer being careful to accurately direct their fire.

8. Or otherwise hiding, or trapped.
The main advantage of rifles over pistols is power and accuracy at long range, but at those kinds of ranges it's easy for people to run away from the shooter. Otherwise, they're simply balky. It's why rifles of any kind are used in only a little less than 2% of violent crimes.

If you are okay with the site of toddlers carting around rifles and glass cases full of Nazi paraphenalia, the Gun Show is the thing for you. Personally, it made me sick.

5. The "loop hole" isn't a loop hole. It is very much in keeping with the law.
Edited on Wed Jan-14-09 09:35 PM by jmg257
It involves one person selling their private property to another person - in this case guns. This is legal just about everywhere in the nation, for long guns at least, as long as the seller knows of no reason why the buyer is restricted from owning the gun . No federal firearms dealer is required to conduct the sale/transfer.

There is nothing special about gun shows that should require special laws - either private sales are legal, or the aren't. It is however a current trend to have all sales at many shows go through dealers, usually per new "local" laws.

You can be as honest as YOU think, but there are plenty of people who have used or could have used firearms for self-defense, people that have NO relation to crack. Chances are THEY would say the need was there - and be quite thankful they had, or wish they had, the choice. If the possibility exists that the need COULD arise, and clearly it does (1.4 MILLION violent crimes & victims annually says it can), the need for adequate defense exists. How likely? Who knows. Possible? Definitely. So why take chances when you CAN be better prepared?

As you say - crazies, and criminals, do exist.

7. My point is the gun nuts fear of dieing at the hands of a criminal is overblown
I fear two lane highways, 18 wheelers, drunk drivers, and poorly secured loads becoming flying debris.

I also have uneasiness about being a pedestrian or riding a bike when I am not on the sidewalk.

I do not fear bullets nearly as much.

6. Oh, and the killers did not get their guns from a gun show. Others bought the guns

at shows, and ILLEGALLY gave them to the juvenile shooters.

"The first was a 22-year-old Columbine High School graduate named Mark Manes (ironically, the son of a longtime Handgun Control, Inc., activist). Manes bought a pistol at a gun show and gave it to the two killers (who were under 18 at the time). Colorado law prohibits giving handguns to juveniles, with certain exceptions, and Manes is currently serving time for this offense in a Colorado prison. The second supplier was an 18-year-old fellow student at Columbine, Robyn Anderson, who bought three long guns for the killers at a Denver-area gun show in December 1998.

Both Manes and Anderson were lawful gun purchasers and could legally have bought the guns from a firearms dealer at a gun store, a gun show, or anywhere else".

I would argue that Anderson's purchases weren't really lawful, as she was clearly making a straw purchase for the scumbags. I know it may seem nit-picking, since there is no doubt the original purchasers were a bit crazy eventual criminals too, but it seems they didn't need a "loop hole".

9. I get my guns at gun shows and I'm crazier than a shithouse rat.

How many people are killed in this country Columbine style every year??

How many unarmed people are killed by the police??

How many are killed by drunk drivers?

Your question is not a question at all, but a simplistic indictment of gun shows and us crazy people who go to them.

And I can run an unlimited number of rounds through my .45, as long as I have magazines full of fat happy bullets.

It doesn't take a massive magazine to shoot a bunch, just the foresight and the ability to reload quickly.

10. Not off hand..
But the anti-civil rights advocates, like to talk about Virginia Tech...

But Cho, bought all of his guns LEGALLY, at a gun store, and PASSED THE BACKGROUND CHECK....

The gun control advocates have no problem using intellectual dishonesty, hell, they have no problem Lying about it.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/28/AR2008012802842.html

Even if the legislation that these "advocates" want, would have passed it STILL WOULD NOT HAVE PREVENTED THE VT MASSACRE..

Just goes to show that many gun control advocates heads would explode if they actully sat down and thought about the bullshit they push.

11. Can you tell us what this "Gunshow Loophole" is?
Most guns sold at gun shows are sold by dealers, who run the exact same background check that they run out of their gun store. The only sales that aren't, are people selling their own guns to people, as a private transaction.
