Please! Tell your kids about the dangers of alcohol poisoning!
Shelby Allen's death caused by alcohol poisoning; parents launch educational campaign

Shelby Lyn Allen, the 17-year-old girl found dead last month at an Old Alturas Road home, died of alcohol poisoning after several hours of heavy drinking, according to a Shasta County Coroner's Office report.

Allen's blood alcohol level was 0.33 percent, according to the report.

"This sad, preventable situation illustrates in the most painful way the need for alcohol poisoning education," Steve Allen, Shelby's father, said Tuesday.

Shelby Allen had 16 or 17 straight shots of vodka, one of the girls said in the report. Allen was 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed 107 pounds.

3. Seriously, why would anyone drink 16 or 17 straight shots
of any alcoholic spirits? Seriously anyone who drinks so irresponsibly is a candidate for the Darwin award.

I have never heard of a Caribbean teenager dying in this way. We learn to drink socially as teenagers in our parents' homes. The issue is not alcohol poisoning education - the issue is making alcohol so freaking desirable will all the stupid bans. Kids need to learn about alcohol in their homes.

6. "We learn to drink socially as teenagers", could this be the key?
Because of a couple of extended family members I had to start talking with my kids about drinking when they were very young. The oldest one told the preschool director that I was drinking and driving on the way to preschool one morning. I was drinking coffee, lol, but she called to inquire.

What they heard from me is don't drink out of (name(s)) drink, don't get in a car with anyone who has been drinking, etc. As they got older the don't ride with anyone who has been drinking was repeated often and the don't drink and drive message began years before any of them were old enough to drive.

I started talking about poisoning in middle school. Before the oldest was getting ready to go to college I offered to allow him to drink so that he would know what one beer or drink feels like so that he could determine his limits and he wasn't interested. I also had to warn him about not leaving a drink for someone to have an opportunity to slip a drug into.

Teenagers/young people have a tendency to feel invincible and I agree that parents need to discuss this.
