Mr. Obama, you must prosecute the criminals.
This country was built on the rule of law. If you do not prosecute those who acted unlawfully for the last 8 years, if "moving forward" is more important than upholding the laws of this country, then this country will descend into chaos.

Regardless of the outcome, our government must do this. If they are not held accountable for breaking the law, then no future administration can be held accountable either.

If Bush, Chaney, and Rumsfeld are above the law, then we all are above the law, and we will lose the last constraints of our society (manners and dignity have long ago fallen by the wayside).

You have no choice. You must do this.

So, Mr. Know It All, are you saying anybody who has a different opinion than yours is crazy?

6. We are about to learn if we are still a Nation of Laws
Edited on Mon Jan-12-09 09:29 PM by Dragonfli
Your post is entirely correct of course - if our representatives plan to uphold their oath to the constitution.

If they are not prosecuted for the crimes commited (the trial would decide guilt or innocence), then we will learn the truth.

We will have our answer.
We will know if we are a nation of laws or men.

I fear the answer, because so many do not think the law should be applied to all equally - even here.

7. Nearly 300 years we've gone, with the understanding
that we are a nation of laws. I don't see that Obama has a choice. We have to uphold the law, at all levels of our society, or we are just the biggest banana republic on the planet.

8. I said you are correct. We are about to find out if that still holds true -
He has no choice - unless we are no longer a nation of laws.
I for one hope we still are.

Taking "Impeachment off the table" implied we are not, implied Pelosi had a choice (she had no such choice - but made one anyway), get it?

11. I hate Banana Republics too. Lets hope for the best and watch closely.
He does understand Constitutional law, the choice he makes will not be lost on him.
We are indeed about to find out once and for all.

10. Interesting quote from Think Progress article
Dawn Johnsen, Obama’s choice to lead the Office of Legal Counsel, rejects Obama’s “look forward” approach. In March 2008, she told “the next president” to avoid “any temptation to simply move on”:

"We must avoid any temptation simply to move on. We must instead be honest with ourselves and the world as we condemn our nation’s past transgressions and reject Bush’s corruption of our American ideals. Our constitutional democracy cannot survive with a government shrouded in secrecy, nor can our nation’s honor be restored without full disclosure."

Perhaps she will encourage him to do the right thing.

12. At least he isn't stupid - he may only need enough evidence put before him.
His rhetoric is troubling but I think there is a good chance that it is only rhetoric.

13. I hope so.
I'm encouraged by his choice of Dawn Johnson. I'm also encouraged by his statements today re: closing Guantanamo, which is an abomination in my eyes.

Have a good evening.

14. As if talking about it on a Sunday talk show means anything at all.
If he were inclined to release the hounds on these bastards, I doubt he would make a public announcement on a talk show two weeks before he is in power.

18. I'm betting that he won't show his cards until he's inaugurated.
Up until 11:59:59 on January 20th, * can still pardon anyone associated with torture. As soon as Obama says "So help me God", * goes back to being a private citizen. Shortly after that, preferably in his inaugural speech, he announces that the DoJ will be prosecuting Cheney, Bush, Yoo, Addington, and all of the other neo-con slimeballs.

There have been far too many secrets and coverups over the course of my fairly long lifetime. Just once I'd like the truth to be exposed and justice to be administered. Just one time, that's all I ask.
