Dear Reverend Phelps,
Edited on Fri Jan-09-09 05:37 PM by proud2Blib
Faced with a lawsuit against his city, filed by the daughter of Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps, St. Joseph, Mo., Mayor Ken Shearin let fly today with a testy response.

The suit, filed earlier this week, challenged the constitutionality of an ordinance that bars protesters from demonstrating at the funerals of fallen service members.

Here’s Shearin’s comment in its entirety:

“I calculate that there are about 26 million living veterans in our Country. I speculate there is not one of them who fought for our freedom-based Country that would not like the opportunity to spit in the eye of these obscure and insignificant radicals.

“Furthermore, I can’t imagine a court system that allows such an insulting challenge to our laws and way of life to proceed, or a lawyer who would stoop low enough to represent them.

“I also can’t imagine any one of these veterans or individuals who believe in the American way of life that would not stand up to these (you fill in the adjective you feel best fits these weirdoes) desecrations of our symbol of a freedom they are taking advantage of.

“The Westboro group should crawl back under the rock they came from. They are an embarrassment to our Country and any aspect of religious belief.”

2. The Westboro Klan abuses the freedom of speech
and it's high time that they be prosecuted for hate crimes and RICO.

3. I've said it before....
When Fred Phelps gorks off and goes down to his eternal reward, his grave is going to need a dance floor.

And a urinal.

5. Very Well Said...
His grave is going to need a dance floor. That beats my Dad's favorite putdown. "He's such an asshole he's going to have to hire pallbearers".

The urinal part was a nice touch also. :)

6. Where the HELL is the IRS?
The membership of the Westboro Baptist "church" is pretty much limited to the Phelps family. Donations are used for political purposes.

If any church cries out to be taxed, it's that one.

So where the hell are they?

11. Why would they be taxed?
Churches are allowed to speak out on issues. They get in trouble when they endorse candidates. And Westboro hates everyone; they never endorse candidates.

7. Howz about a nice, classy statement for the sympathy card?
"When he was alive, I used to say: You will recognize me at his funeral. I'll be wearing a festive shirt, sipping champagne and looking for an attractive tango partner. But since I missed the funeral, let me say this: If I ever move to St Joseph, I will get a dog. And I will walk my dog in the cemetary where Fred is buried. And every day, my dog will shit on Fred's grave."

9. I don't agree
I take the stance that Steve Martin's mobster character in, "My Blue Heaven," takes about how the Bill of Rights is there to protect sleazeballs like him.
