Previously they would do it with the mail: "Urgent! Immediate Reply Requested." All kinds of inappropriate words.

They left me a voice message during work that I had to call this one woman back at the local office. I freaked. When I got her, she gave me a sales pitch for a checking/savings account.

7. Hit the "talk to a person" option

When you get put through to someone, run through the following script (you probably won't get to all the questions):

1. Could I have your name, please?

2. Could I have your supervisor's name?

3. What is the name of your company?

4. Where is your company incorporated?

Long before you get to question three, the call will almost certainly be over. Don't answer any questions, just ask a question until you get a satisfactory answer. It's easy. It's even kind of fun. And it's all perfectly within the law. You don't have to cuss or swear, just ask the questions politely and relentlessly.

to one of those "lower your credit card interest rates". Pressed 9 like instructed and the person on the other end with out any introduction at all; just asked for the account number. I said no I want you take me off your call list. The lady laughed and hung up on me.

Phone numbers from this were showing up as coming England and one time I tried to call back; and just got some poor old chap who had no idea why some Yank from America was calling him to cuss him out. All these callers are now scammers using internet phone technology to spoof numbers and hide their origins. The lady who wanted my account info would have gotten just what she need to drain the account and then hung up on me.

And when you call the number back, there ain't no such one.

But by asking them for their name, it usually catches them off guard. They're used to being cursed, told to take folks off their list, and so forth. If you can gain the upper hand, even for a moment, and then press your advantage, it can be quite amusing for up to a minute or so. And by tying them up, they can't be on other calls.

You can also Google the phone number if capture it on caller ID. There are whole web pages devoted to some of these assholes, and you can read about other people's experience with them to use as ammunition against the jerk on the other end of the line.

11. Do Not Call List is a JOKE!

I am a secretary and the Warranty Help Desk (a car warranty company and they claim that is the name of their company name) keeps calling my office, me and my attorneys, one by one, going down the row of phone numbers, one after the other a couple of times a week. I stay on the line and connect to them and every time I tell them all numbers are on the do not call list, then I ask them to remove the numbers from their list personally, then I read off every phone number for every one at the office I can think of. I hang up then they call the next number. I do it again. I'm really sick of these people.

I also now getting survey calls from a company called Scarborough Research Company (a sub of Arbitron) on my cell phone. I tell them about the DNC list and they tell me it doesn't apply to them since they aren't selling me anything. I ask them to remove my number from their list. They've called me three time since, within two weeks. I now keep them on the line for at least a half and hour griping them out, asking their names, their company names, who hired them, why can't they leave me alone, why can't they remove my name from their list. It makes me feel better to curse at them and they won't hang up for anything. They always call while I'm cooking dinner. I've complained to my cell phone company.

What else can we do?! Can I give out their phone number and websites so that we can spam them? Seriously, I am fed up and was thinking about making a post about it so thank you for yours. Now I'm all riled up again :grr:

18. What has worked for me

the warranty and the cc card calls have an opt out option at the end of the call, they tell you push a number if you do not want to be called again, and it actually seems to have worked.
I get no more calls now that I have learned to sit thru the recording and wait to find out the opt out number.

Phone has been real quiet for over a year now.
We also put a lot of stuff in the dog's name.
Junk mail is a dead give away after that.
