I hate to say this, but...
...I'm pretty God damned excited about the upcoming Obama administration.

I know, I know, it cuts against the grain around here. I might be a bigot, a sellout, an appeaser, a fascist, a dupe...hell, around here, I'm all that and more for actually being pleased about the imminent arrival of a Democratic administration and Democratic majorities in the House and Senate.

What can I say? I'm incorrigible.

I'm excited. So there.

:P

But I can still feel excitement even when I have disagreements.

There is no way anyone could be worse than what we've had for eight years.
The decisions made by this President can only be better. I can see they won't be perfect, but they'll be better and..citing an old cliche... if you can't have a whole loaf, a half a loaf is...an improvement.
We citizens MUST continue to let our government representatives know when we are pleased and certainly when we are displeased.

I know it's been pretty negative and depressing here the last few weeks but I won't let that get me down. We Democrats did it and I have faith that Obama is going to lead this country back on track after the Bush disaster.

I am putting up a picture that my brother took of my niece the day after the election and it keeps me positive through all the doom and gloom on here. I hope this works, I'm not too computer literate.

32. Care to elaborate on that excitement, Will?
Edited on Fri Jan-09-09 12:00 PM by RufusTFirefly
I know you're not alone in your excited anticipation of an Obama administration.

I think the symbolic importance of his presidency cannot be easily dismissed. Having a black man named Barack Obama as President sends a powerful message to the rest of the world. (On the other hand, those who discount the Warren invocation as merely symbolic are trying to have it both ways.) It's also a huge help that he's a really smart, charismatic young man, with a nuanced world view that contrasts sharply with the simplistic positions of that sociopathic oaf who is currently occupying the White House illegally.

It's OK to marvel at the prospect of the coming Obama presidency and to heave a huge sigh of relief for the nation, the world, and the planet that the oil man would appear to be on the way out at last.

But maintenance of our badly damaged democracy requires eternal vigilance and I for one don't intend to give Obama a pass simply because he isn't Bush.

That said, when I watched the elections, listened to his acceptance address, remembered his extraordinary speech about race, delighted in his beautiful photogenic family, and even listened to Michael Franti's catchy song, I couldn't totally tamp down a deep sense of celebration, excitement and optimism about the days to come. My emotional side may soar from time to time, but my intellectual side remains firmly on the ground and on orange alert.

37. Incorrigibles unite!
Me too. I'm signing on 100%. I don't care if it's Pollyanna. I don't even care if I disagree wholeheartely with certain decisions, picks. Hell, in fact I like it! It feels really healthy to be unhappy - even angry - with certain choices, yet to still be in support overall. Like that's reality - that's the way it's supposed to be. Healthy - even productive - disagreement. That's what he says he wanted, and I'm holding him to it.

But bottom line is, I'm all there for Obama and his team. Whatever they ask me to do - I'm there, starting with 1/19, the day of service - a "day on, not a day off." I guess I'm just starry-eyed enough to believe if we Americans, as Obama believes, gather up our bootstraps and pull TOGETHER, there's not much we can't accomplish. Emphasis on TOGETHER. Let's show the rest of the world that WE'VE STILL GOT IT! :)

40. I'm not exactly jumping for joy, but I've settled down some. I like
what I've seen from him in the last week, regarding how he plans to handle the economy. I made a pact with myself that I would allow him and his cabinet the time to put his recovery policies in place and give them some time to either work or not work, before I mouth off. The president deserves at least that much from us. I know I sure as hell wouldn't want to tackle the problems his administration must face.

I want to love you, feel you, wrap myself around you
I want to squeeze you, please you, I just can't get enough
And if you move real slow I let it go

I'm so excited and I just can't hide it
I'm about to lose control and I think I like it
I'm so excited and I just can't hide it
And I know I know I know I know I know I want you

We shouldn't even think about tomorrow
Sweet memories will last for long long time
We'll have a good time, Baby, don't do worry
And if we're still playin' around boy that's just fine

Let's get excited, we just can't hide it
I'm about to lose control and I think I like it
I'm so excited and I just can't hide it
I know I know I know I know I know I want you, I want you

I know I'm going to cry like I did when the Clintons had a receiving line for a very long line of ordinary citizens on inauguration day at the White House. After 12 years of "greed is good", I sobbed watching the expressions of hope on the faces of those who shook the Clintons' hands.

I'm going to be even more emotional watching Obama's inauguration, for so many reasons.

Wheeeee!

54. Is Democratic UNDERGROUND Anachronistic ?
With the past election the Democrats are now Above Ground. And more than one, myself included, are getting a headache from the light.

We've won. Or, at the very least, the Bush-ites have lost. Now, the whole idea of being the opposition, of being the contrarians, of being the staunch hold-outs against a bad President and his administration has ended for the time being, hopefully for a very long time.

So, what is one to do? If you are truly a denizen of the underground, then you will successfully seek out other things to be in protest against. As for me, it's sunglasses and Tylenol, and a lot of squinting to try and see what all is out here.

A kind mentor told me that that dark thing behind me is called a "shadow." It is nothing to be afraid of. Further, arguing with it or attacking it is a complete waste of time and very humorous to the onlookers.

I clearly have a lot to learn.

71. Will you still be as gushy when 2016 rolls around and we're no closer
to universal health care then we are now? I'm not being a smart-ass; it's a serious question.

73. Gasp! How dare you be excited! I really expect to read more "constructive criticism".
After all, nobody is good enough for some people. We've had so many years of Bushco that some people seem compelled to find something wrong with everything and cannot seem to get out of that mode. A white page with a blue dot gets slammed for not being pure enough. I'd hate to be the kid, spouse, or SO of one of these "constructive criticism" types.

75. "I might be a bigot, a sellout, an appeaser, a fascist, a dupe..." Close:
Actually, you're a homophobe, misogynist, corporatist, land rapist, capitalist pig, and morally bankrupt.

At least that what's I've been told.

83. Well after Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, Bush 1 and Bush 2
All presidents in my adult life hell yes I am excited about Obama.
And I am not all upset about his appointments although I am radical enough to think that Ralph Nader should be the Attorney General.
I prefer to trust his judgment and believe that he really does want to change things for the better.

Nonetheless, I'm cautiously optimistic about Obama's administration and the Democratic Congress.

I'm excited too but I worry about the table. I'm still going to bang the pots and pans. Which is what Molly Ivins would be doing. Not caring if anyone else was. Only caring that it was important to bang the pots and pans.
