Pelosi "urging" Obama to repeal Bush tax cuts

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tells Politico she's "urging" President-Elect Barack Obama to quickly repeal Bush administration tax cuts for the wealthy -- not wait for them to expire in 2010, as Obama has suggested he might do.

"He has the full package of what he wants to do, and we'll respect what he is saying, but put me down as one who is urging repeal," said Pelosi, ducking into her Capitol office suite to watch Obama's dour speech on the economy.

Pelosi supports Obama's push to include $300 billion in middle-class tax relief but she has long been a critic of Bush's cuts for families making over $250,000 a year.

2. Good. Playing Devil's advocate on the Dem side might be a good way,
to counter Republican objections to other parts of Obama's plan.

It also reminds GOP members that if they don't cry out about deficit spending and stall, they get to keep their tax cuts till 2010.

Excellent Strategy on the parts of the Dems....which is all that this is, IMO.

4. Did Pelosi actually say something good?
Maybe there are chilly days in Hell. I'll take it, though!

7. Pelosi's been improving lately.
Maybe she's actually learning how to be Speaker of the House without tripping up so much. Maybe now that the Bushies have been mostly neutered and she's got a healthy Democratic majority, she has more to work with.

Don't get me wrong. I'm still unhappy with her greatest flops like "Impeachment is off the table!" and FISA, but I think she is improving, and she's doing better than Harry Reid.

Note with the auto bailout - it sailed through the House pretty quickly, but got stalled in the Senate.

I still think Pelosi will need a lot of swift kicks in the ass to get her to perform, but she's made a few steps in the right direction.
