WOW!!! Fresh Air with Terry Gross - Prosecuting War Crimes for Torture In The U.S.
Edited on Wed Jan-07-09 06:59 PM by Dover

Wow...this is a call to investigate and prosecute. Terry Gross interviews Phillipe Sands, author of, Torture Team,. British lawyer Philippe Sands accuses the Bush administration of condoning harsh interrogation techniques. Perhaps the interview should have had the title,
Kill All The Lawyers, because that seems to be what he is proposing should happen, making the assumption that Cheney/Bush/Rumsfeld are probably off limits for prosecution, and he particularly doubts they will be held accountable in the U.S.. International law bodies are getting a lot of pressure to act if the U.S. does not, though he concludes that they will also shy away from the top eschelon. Already, he says, many who were involved will not travel outside the U.S..

Personally I think it will require that level of justice (prosecuting Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Feith, et al) for this country to retrieve its place in the world and to be taken seriously. Also it's the only way for us to truly begin to heal the deep wounds and calm the festering anger. Our Congress has already failed us completely in this regard so far, probably because they were complicit. How cowardly to pass the buck to someone else beyond our borders to do the dirty work. That shame will not go away soon and refusing to uhold our laws REGARDLESS of who breaks them will only deepen the suspicion and cynicism that has already grown in leaps and bounds over the past 8 years.

At any rate, at least this discussion has now entered the mainstream...

Well worth a listen:

Sands also appeared last night on a discussion panel that followed the devastating PBS documentary about this same subject titled, Torturing Democracy. Here's an earlier post on that:
