Actor Pat Hingle dies at age 84

Actor Pat Hingle died Saturday night after a battle with blood cancer. He was 84.

The veteran of stage, television and film acting passed away at 10:45 p.m. Saturday at his Carolina Beach home, according to family spokesperson Lynn Heritage. He suffered from myelodysplasia, with which he was diagnosed in November 2006. He was survived by his wife, Julia, two sisters, five children and 11 grandchildren.

Born Martin Patterson Hingle in Miami on July 19, 1924, Hingle had a long career that took him around the country until he settled in the Wilmington area in 1986 after filming the big-screen thriller “Maximum Overdrive.” More recently, while living in Carolina Beach, Hingle continued to work in commercial productions, including “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” which filmed in Charlotte, as well as local independent productions “The List” and “Undoing Time.” He also appeared on Wilmington stages in plays such as “Tuesdays With Morrie” and “Our Town.”

When most people think of Hingle, any number of iconic images emerge. He is known as much for his role as a cantankerous judge opposite Clint Eastwood in “Hang ‘em High” (1968) as he is for the role as Sally Field’s father in “Norma Rae” (1979). Younger generations know him better as Commissioner Gordon from the late ’80s and early ’90s Batman movies.

A cool character actor...:( Cross Gently, Pat.

18. Two words for you!
The first one starts with an F.

Gee, was Pat sixteen years old and a minor?

Did he have autism?

Go back to your cult leader and tell them your "swarm" isn't working.

Loser.

14. Insurance won't cover the bone marrow transplant if over 65.
Not the way ER covered it on TV, but it's what a friend of mine is facing now. Blood transfusions, with the thought of those being needed because they also won't allow excessive B12 shots.

Not that we ration anything. :eyes:

8. One of the most memorable MASH episodes ever.
"No-nonsense Colonel Daniel Webster Tucker, a notorious disciplinarian with a short fuse, visits during an outbreak of April Fool's Day pranks. Potter tries to put a stop to the mayhem, which includes Klinger taking Rizzo's advice to use reverse psychology as his latest ploy to gain a discharge."

It's one of those rare episodes of any TV show I've remembered since it aired. I'll think of it for random reasons, like when considering April Fool's jokes or great gags.

RIP Pat Hingle. Thanks for sharing your life with us.

I also remember Pat Hingle when he played one of the supporting cast on 'Gunsmoke' - the town doctor. He did a lot of TV plays back in the 50s and 60s when televised plays were very popular, and as a character actor in shows like 'Twilight Zone,' too.

R.I.P. Pat Hingle ... you brought enjoyment to millions and millions.

15. RIP, Pat.
He also played the town doctor (Dr. John Chapman) on "Gunsmoke" for a few episodes although Milburn Stone's Doc Adams is best remembered in that role.

16. Actors in previous Clint Eastwood movies should be careful...
Sam Bottoms passed away several days ago, too.

He was the young soldier in The Outlaw Josey Wales who rode with Wales at the start of the movie.

So, Hingle is a second one.

From what I remember, he was in Hang 'Em High and The Gauntlet.

Rip you two..
