FBI E-Mail Says Bush Authorized Abuse of Iraqi Detainees
Written by Jason Leopold
Friday, 02 January 2009 15:04

An e-mail written by a senior FBI agent in Iraq in 2004 specifically stated that President George W. Bush had signed an Executive Order approving the use of military dogs, sleep deprivation and other tactics to intimidate Iraqi detainees.

The FBI e-mail--dated May 22, 2004 http://www.aclu.org/torturefoia/released/FBI.121504.4940_4941.pdf
--followed disclosures about abuse of Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib prison and sought guidance on whether FBI agents in Iraq were obligated to report the U.S. military’s harsh interrogation of inmates when that treatment violated FBI standards but fit within the guidelines of a presidential Executive Order.

The FBI e-mail was obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit. The White House had emphatically denied that any such presidential Executive Order existed, calling the unnamed FBI official who wrote the e-mail “mistaken.”

The ACLU has called on Congress to demand that a special prosecutor be appointed to investigate whether the President and other officials broke federal and international laws, “including the War Crimes Act, the federal Anti-Torture Act, and federal assault laws.”

2. I share your frustration.
Despite the fact there's only a couple weeks left, we should still push for impeachment. Kucinich needs to renew his call at the start of the 111th Congress on the 6th and introduce new articles. Whether we succeed or not isn't the point. What matters is that we stood up for the principles the nation was founded on.

14. Typical MSM headline...."abuse" rather than "torture."
With the Giggling Murderer at 18% and sinking, they still can't call it what it is.

15. Not the only war criminal....
Everyone who approved the resolutions allowing the invasion and occupation of both Afghanistan and Iraq is a war criminal as well.

As I recall Hillary Clinton said she didn't really read all the intelligence provided to her. She like everyone else in Congress simply wanted to look patriotic. Wave the flag and drop the bombs.

The blood of millions is on their hands as well. We are a shameful nation. And a falling empire.

16. Well, so what? Did anyone think otherwise? And they repercussions
for these criminals will be?

Oh yeah, nothing. I forgot. This is Amurika! The land where all the rules of civilized behavior can be thrown out the window. The land where the rich can steal everything regardless of whether its nailed dow or not, and the middle classes and the poor will support whatever their 'betters' do with their tax dollars and the lives of their children.

Obama will hold no hearings, no one will ever pay.

17. Hopefully this will lead to the executive order itself.
So far the email says it exists but the WH denies it. I'd say a special prosecutor is definitely in order. There is no reason for the FBI agent to lie but there IS reason for the WH to lie. Therefore, it's not a giant leap to conclude that the executive order exists. Will Congress want to pursue this? Hopefully so.

22. I'd like to see a massive round of de-classification from the Obama admin as well
De-classify all the stuff that was improperly classified top secret national security only because it was embarrassing to President Bush. Political embarrassment is not a valid reason for classifying documents.

As they used to say in the '60s, "Let the sun shine in."

26. January 10th - from the email...
The FBI email states the investigation into the abuse started before we got there (January 10)...

I believe that means the investigation began January 10. This date could be the same as the one of that mysteriously disappeared CENTCOM Briefing where the General, Kimmit possibly, reported there were allegations of abuse at abu Ghraib prison..."there may be photographs".

Of course there is an executive order otherwise why would that briefing, I saw it on CNN that very day, be down the memory hole. Bush Never thought this would see the light of day.

...+... connecting the dots. :hi:
