That Republicans are better than Democrats in one way is made clear time and time again...
A sitting governor appoints a DEMOCRAT to the Senate whose only real "taint" is the appointment itself. What do the Senate Democrats do? Threaten to physically keep him out.

Now take the Senate Republicans. They LOSE an election and threaten to keep the winner, a Democrat, out until...get this...ALL legal proceedings are completed. Cue Sen. Reid's acquiescence.

Republicans are light-years ahead of Democrats when it comes to power politics.

2. We must destroy the Republican party. In this case the ends justify the means.

We should be attacking the GOP for being "obstructionist" about Burris. We should be defending Blago or at least be silent about him. We should not be attacking our own. The GOP is a powerful force because they don't believe in truth, they believe in winning. That's the only idea we should borrow from the GOP. That's the only part of their twisted ideology that makes any sense in the real world.

8. We should only adopt their tactics, not their policies. This is why the DLC fails.

3. I disagree.
They have their reasons:

Per Dionne:

But Republicans would be merciless about the taint that would attach to Burris’ Senate vote and argue that the nation’s Democratic majority was hopelessly wrapped up in Chicago politics at its most corrupt.

That’s why Democrats have opted for warfare. This will inevitably involve an increasingly tough offensive against Burris himself, a challenge to his judgment in accepting Blagojevich’s gift, and a willingness on the part of Democrats to live without one of Illinois’ Senate votes for a while.

5. There seems to be a contradiction in your post
You say democrats aren't afraid of Republicans and you give the reason that "But Republicans would be merciless about the taint that would attach to Burris’ Senate vote"
The post was about Republicans being better at "Power Politics" and you give a great example but to the detriment of your point. It is precisely that Republicans would be merciless that puts so much fear into Democrats..

6. I never said Dems aren't afraid of rethugs.
I think now they're in fact coming from a better position of power, but they need to push their weight around finally, keeping in mind the rethug response to situations such as this.

4. It is because the Democrats always cower to the Republicans
Stand your ground and if the GOP wants to pull some bullshit, call them out on it instead of getting defensive.

Obama is the master of this political jujitsu, so I am not worried.

9. Sad but true. For too long, Democrats labored under the illusion that they were in a fair fight...

So they compromised, time after time, and took their lumps, remaining polite all the while, trusting that all would be treated fairly in the end. That's just not the way this dirty business works -- and the GOP machine has been running circles around Democrats since 1980.

That the GOP's smear tactics didn't work last November is encouraging; but then there's Rick Warren delivering the invocation to the Democratic inauguration. Does anyone think that the GOP would invite Jesse Jackson to perform a similar duty at a Republican inauguration?

Another thing that Republicans do better than Democrats is to stick together. When one of their own is in some tight spot, the GOP will close ranks and defend that individual.

The contrast in styles was very apparent in the 2000 Florida recount. The Republicans won that battle by a show of strength and intimidation -- they were fully prepared and willing to be aggressive. And Democrats, always wanting to be the fair player, pursued a doomed strategy, confining the recount to a few counties, when there should have been a statewide recount.

Taking the high road is honorable, but unfortunately, in the arena of politics, nice guys do indeed finish last.

10. If Coleman comes out slightly on top, would the Dems keep him out
until the race is certified?

Very little is going to change in the Senate- no matter how many votes the Dems end up with, until they find a way to get Harry Reid to step aside.
