Regarding "Barack the Magic Negro."
Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 11:33 AM by Cyrano
Isn't it amazing that wingnut politicians can't tell the difference between satire and racism? Either that, or they just believe that many agree with them.

Chip Saltsman, a candidate for the RNC chairmanship, is a Tennessee Republican who distributed a CD that contained "Barack the Magic Negro," a racist take-off on "Puff the Magic Dragon," first played on the air by Limbaugh in 2007. (Other songs on the CD had titles which included "Ivory and Ebony," "The Star Spanglish Banner," "Wright Place, Wrong Pastor.") In other words, a CD that could easily be titled "#1 Hits for Bigots."

With my apologies to millions of white, progressive, sane Southerners, why is the South still stuck with so many politicians who are among the worst racist scum on earth? That's not to say there aren't others (northerners, mid-westerners, westerners, etc.), who are either total racists, or screaming assholes. But Southern politician's have raised being first-class pricks into an art form.

How often have you seen this takeoff titled "Barack the Magic Negro" mentioned in the MSM? What if it was a recording titled "Schumer the Magic Jew," or "Maddow the Magic Lesbian," or "Mitt with the Magic Mormon Underwear"? Does anyone really believe that any of these "parodies" wouldn't receive MSM attention and condemnation?

In 23 days, Barack Obama will be the President of the United States. How dare this disgusting piece of trash named Chip Saltsman insult "The Office Of The President" in this way? After all, wouldn't he and his ilk been outraged if we had turned out a parody on "their" president titled "Bush the Magic Moron?"

1. I think we should include Saltsman in the inauguration ceremonies.
perhaps he could offer to sing some of his favorites?

10. Only if the crowd is sufficiently equipped
With an ample supply of overripe produce. Or shoes. But not the kind of shoes that misses its target; I want shoes that are going to hit my target right in the kisser.

2. Bravo. Good points, though
in their defense, I did hear cnn mention the tape a number of times last night, promising wall to wall coverage today.

Listening to m$nbc now and that's not happening.

3. W... The Magic Embarrassment
Now that would make sense.

It is obviously racist --- but they say it isn't... and if you say it is racist, you are just a whiner. Twisting the facts is what they do best.

8. No
I like this one

"Bush the Coke Snortin' Draft Dodger"

Or we could include the current First "Lady"

"Laura, the Boyfriend Killing Librarian"

And let's not forget

"Dick, the Friend Shooting Hunter"

4. I seem to recall the same things being said on DU during primary season.
There were several long and flame-filled threads about "magic negro" that nauseated me. :puke:

11. Those threads were probably kicked off by Limbaugh playing the
recording on the air in 2007.

I am often disappointed when passions take over for reason on DU. I can't imagine DUers defending this offensive take-off, but who knows? There are always "reasonable" people willing to defend the indefensible.

5. Slightly off topic, but have you noticed the resemblance between...
Chip Saltsman and George Allen?

It's utterly UNCANNY!:wow:

6. We did, and they were,
but moronic behavior is not a taint.

Racial scapegoating is a blight on the human soul.
Demeaning an individual for their lack of intellectual capacity
is not, regardless of how insulting, quite the same as race baiting
or even gender bashing.

Unless, of course you plan on rounding up the moronic.

12. nope
I am saying that we did call Bush a moron.

And that it is quite different to call someone a moron than to call them a bastard.

14. That article is outrageous. I don't know which is worse - reading a contemptible allegation

like this when it comes out or missing it and reading it months later.

Thanks for posting. Yes, this is the prompt.

I keep thinking that the last article I read coming from the LAT is the last one I'll ever read. I'm glad I read this one. Triple confirms my opinion of the LAT.

16. There's nothing outrageous
I guess you missed the bit where the writer mentioned that he, too, is african-american.

15. The "Magic Negro" archetype in fiction long predates that LA Times article. But people like
Rush Limbaugh obviously have no interest in exploring cultural archetypes, the whole song is just an exercise for him to get his listener's racist jollies by invoking the word "Negro" in reference to the President-Elect (then a candidate).

It would be good background music....
