Can you believe how high the price of Beluga Caviar is going?
Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 09:59 AM by Philosoraptor
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/2820440/Price-of-Beluga-caviar-up-nearly-50pc.html

The rich and famous could be without one of their favourite foods for Christmas after caviar retailers warned that stocks of the delicacy are so low that they might run out before the festive period.

The price of Beluga caviar has spiked over the past month, rising nearly 50pc from £340 to £495 for 50g, according to Caviar House & Prunier, a leading retailer.

Stocks are so depleted that suppliers have warned that prices could rise further amid fears that stocks could run dry.

Beluga and Almas, the most expensive type of caviar, are eggs extracted from sturgeon fished exclusively in the Caspian Sea.

-------------------------------------------

I mean, I eat it every day, but Jesus, if the price keeps going up I may have to break down and try a (shudder) less expensive brand than I currently consume.

Pardon me, do you have any budget caviar? ...but of course.

1. It's ridiculous!
I've stooped to watering mine down with Grey Poupon. It's to the point we have stopped letting the kids have it for breakfast.

If I can just keep the caviar weevils out, I'll be OK.

20. Napoleon brandy should eliminate those nasty caviar weevils.
Just splash it liberally around the infested area.

17. Actually, there are "budget" caviars...
Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 10:45 AM by JHB
They're made from salmon roe, trout roe, etc.

At £495 for 50g, that converts to about $393/oz. for the Beluga caviar.

One US-based fancy-foods site (http://www.markys.com/caviar/customer/home.php) lists a 2 oz. container of Royal Beluga at $600, or $300/oz.: same ballpark as far as us mere mortals are concerned.

They have 1 oz. of pink trout roe caviar at a more-affordable $6.49, and 1 oz. of salmon roe caviar as low as $3.81.

Still too rich for my table, I'll stick with (processed) cheese (food) and crackers, but there you have it.

22. harvesting caviar is utterly disgusting -
and I'm a meatatarian but I won't eat that.

At least with cattle there is NO part that isn't completely used after slaughter, and a bolt gun is very quick. I would think differently if I knew we were just slashing open cows and scraping out their eggs while they were still alive and then throwing their thrashing bodies back overboard.

27. Perhaps some "Caviar Helper" can stretch the budget.
Also, for pâté (sp?), you can substitute salmon cat food. The Hoi Polloi will never know.

Cheers!

Joanna: Well! I *almost* had to wait.

Joanna: What is this

Joanna: gelatinous muck? Andrew, when I tell you to pack staples must I specify that you are to pack *good* caviar and not this $1.99 fish bait?

I still think that's a funny movie.
