many local school boards in various locations over the years and a distressingly small number of members of these boards did not bring a narrow personal agenda with them while pretending they were motivated by a desire to perform a public service for the good of the local community's efforts to prepare their children to fend for themselves as adults.

The USA stands alone as the worst example of modern, highly industrialized nations when it comes to "public" education. It is way past time for the American mantra of "we are new, we are different, we are better than you, and if you don't believe it, we will destroy you" posture. Globalization means more than buying from whomever makes the cheapest stuff.

On or like a day after 9/11 I remember there was a short essay by a member of DU asking us to all rally behind Bush. I think, at that point, anyone who hadn't been paying close attention to Bush's daily dismantling of the Clinton legacy might have jumped on board with the sentiment but most had watched his actions and knew that putting support behind Bush's "solutions" was a very bad idea.
