Students told to stay silent while eating lunch

WARWICK, R.I. -- A new lunchtime rule at a Catholic school in Warwick. Talking is now banned.

The principal of the Saint Rose of Lima School banned talking at lunch after three students choked in the cafeteria.

4. They'll adopt the "sign language" used at Great Lakes
Pat your head for permission to use the head, wave your hand in front of your mouth for someone to pass hot sauce. Was it one finger for salt, two for pepper?

I don't think it is wise for such authoritarian tactics to be used on children in schools.

3. I saw that yesterday. Maybe if they gave the kids more time to
eat, they wouldn't be talking and chewing at the same time. My 10yo gets 22 minutes to eat. I remember when I was 10, I would go home for lunch, grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup and watch cartoons for a bit before going back.

*sigh*

5. It hurts your food when you chew it
It hurts your food when you chew it.
It hurts your food when you chew it.
So the next time you eat--
Think twice!
Don't do it!
'Cause it hurts your food when you chew it.

7. That was the way it was when I went to Catholic Grade School in the 1960's
We were not allowed to talk during lunch. Once out on the playground after you finished it was fine, but not in the lunchroom. The rule was about discipline and not about anything else. So since the food was terrible, we choked it down quickly and got outside, which I am sure was also part of the plan. Get the brats fed and outside so that the cafeteria ladies didn't have to put up with us.
