3. I'm glad he realized his "incest" comments were wrong
I'm glad he at least wants equal legal rights for gay couples.

6. Oh, so she just wants us to "get over it."
She has no idea how badly she's hurt us. When will we see Melissa Etheridge associating with klan members, huh?

17. that's what i thought
i would be an ass if i attempted to assume everything that was said in the conversation, and how it went.

when i read her story i immediately thought of (not sure why) the scene in "But I'm a Cheerleader" where they confront her at home before they ship her off to be "rehabilitated". they present her with the "evidence" and one piece included a Melissa Etheridge poster. great movie. ton of people in it.

8. You can't change someone's heart for the better by hating them
It just doesn't work that way.

What a lovely letter, and what a wise woman ME is.

9. If Warren really regrets comparing homosexuality to pedophilia
Then he needs to make a video retracting those statements.

14. agreed!!
i'm one of those morons that believes in hope. i am still clinging to the hope that people can change for the better, and that bigotry like this can dissipate completely.

the problem is that it is going to take some really stubborn folks to finally open up their minds and hearts and realize they're operating solely on fear instead of their assumed rationality.

i am upset about the invocation for two reasons. i'm athesit, and despise the homophobia shit. his appointment was, to say the least, confusing on many levels.

for me, as one to not usually sit on the sidelines to wait and see, have chosen to do so out of mere curiosity, and that ridiculous hope thingy again. i'm secretly hoping this will be the beginning of a lot of dialogue, healing, and understanding. not sure if it'llpan out that way, but hope i will nonetheless.

in the event their is no perceivable progress once he is in office, i will THEN turn on the administration like a rabid spider monkey. i will NOT sit by and watch more oppression of the GLBT community. but i also will not give up hope that there is a chance, albeit a slim one, that SOME good can come out of this.

12. This has now been posted MULTIPLE TIMES across DU.

To the point of ad naseum. Yes, we fucking get it. Ethridge wants to make nice with Warren! Great!

One little question for Melissa and Rick: Melissa, will you and your immediate family (wife and kids) be attending Rick's church any time soon? And Rick, will an openly gay, lesbian woman married to another woman NOT ONLY BE WELCOMED in your church for services, but also welcome into your church's membership, as an out, lesbian married to her lesbian partner?

I ask this because Ethridge has very publicly said she does not want to pay California state taxes until she has the same rights to marry as straight Californians. Rick Warren not only supported H8, but did so publicly from his pulpit.

We Can Do Better!:kick:STOP the H8!

15. didn't realize i may have posted a DUP
i checked and didn't see anything on it.

i ran across it and thought it was worth discussing.

you're right. hypocrisy is abound, and if he's willing to make amends, true amends can only come from true acceptance of his guilt. acceptance into the church for all, and a public apology wouldn't fucking kill him either.

16. She makes some reasonable points for meeting and talking
with Warren, but I still think it was wrong for Obama to invite him to speak/pray. There is a big difference!

18. in the end
it's forcing the subject out in the open.

it's a start. whether it was offensive of him to ask Warren or not, it got the dialogue started for a lot of people who would otherwise still have their heads in the sand. its, ironically enough, "outing" all the bigots.

20. While I think you are correct that it forces the subject into the open,
I do not think the pain it has caused so many is really worth it.
