Those annoying little truths
1)
2007 Annual Report on Anti-LGBT Hate Violence Released
Report shows a 24% increase in incidents over 2006

May 20, 2008

Overall, NCAVP’s 2007 report noted an alarming 24% increase in total number of victims reporting incidents of anti-LGBT violence In 2007, total number of offenders also increased about 5% over numbers in 2006.

Additionally, 2007 had the third highest murder rate in the past 10 years that NCAVP has been compiling the Hate Violence Report LGBT people also reported a 61% increase in sexual assaults perpetrated as hate crimes.

“We know that the 2,430 people who called on our organizations in 2007 are only a small fraction of the actual number of LGBT people who experienced bias-motivated violence,” said Skolnik. “Anecdotally, we constantly hear stories of LGBT people surviving abuse - sometimes multiple attacks per day when that violence comes from a fellow student, a neighbor, a co-worker, a landlord, or a boss.”

2)AP: Lesbian's brutal gang rape investigated in Calif.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gHp5VUw2Jgs-DbLaP8ZZBEKAj3cwD9584PU80

3)"Assailants target LGBT people of all gender identities with sexual assault," he said. "Such targeting is one of the most cruel, dehumanizing and violent forms of hate violence that our communities experience."

Skolnik said the group plans to analyze hate crime data to see whether fluctuations may be related to the gay marriage bans that appeared on ballots this year in California, Arizona and Florida.

4)NYC immigrant beaten in suspected homophobic attack dies

5)While on a family cruise leaving from Miami Lisa Pond, a healthy 39 year-old, suddenly collapsed. She was rushed to Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital with her partner Janice and three children following close behind. There, the hospital refused to accept information from Janice about her partner's medical history. Janice was informed that she was in an antigay city and state, and she could expect to receive no information or acknowledgment as family. A doctor finally spoke with Janice telling her that there was no chance of recovery. Other than one five minute visit, which was orchestrated by a Catholic priest at Janice's request to perform last rites, and despite the doctor's acknowledgement that no medical reason existed to prevent visitation, neither Janice nor her children were allowed to see Lisa until nearly eight hours after their arrival. Soon after Lisa's death, Janice tried to get her death certificate in order to get Life Insurance and Social Security benefits for their children. She was denied both by the State of Florida and the Dade County Medical Examiner.

6)Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth: An epidemic of homelessness - 40% of homeless youth are LGBT:

do I really need to post more?

As long as hatred is cloaked in religion, NOTHING WILL CHANGE

So, pardon me for feeling that my very life is at stake with this issue. Or am I just a silly queer?

Comparing LGBTQ to pedophiles directly results in more attacks on our community. What happens on this so-called progressive board when a pedophile story comes out? Calls to "string-em-up" "kill them all" "they can't be cured" etc are shouted to the rooftops. Now, your favorite preacher man likens gay relationships to pedophilia.

And here's a nifty truth for those who are so concerned with truths:

"Anytime there is an anti-LGBT initiative, we tend to see spikes both in the numbers and the severity of attacks," he said. "People feel this extra entitlement to act out their prejudice."

So while a jackass leads the nation in prayer at the invite of the PE I won't be watching. RICK WARREN AND HIS ILK PREACHING THEIR HATE FROM THE PULPIT DIRECTLY LEADS TO THE ABUSE, RAPE AND MURDER OF LGBT AMERICANS.

Oh wait, I forgot, we have to meet this bigoted Jackass somewhere in the middle or *we're* the problem. My bad, I forgot that we're supposed to shuffle and beg, hold our hats out and plea to be treated as human beings. FUCK THAT. I have a feeling the radicalization of the queer community is just beginning. We didn't start it, but we're sure as hell not going to take it any more.

How's that for some truths for 'ya?

That's a great term. The ones who start out posts with "I'm not a (bigot)*, BUT..."

Funny, what comes after that is pretty much always Bigot Central. :puke:

*you see all forms of this. "I'm not a racist, BUT..." The currently most relevant form is, "I'm not a homophobe BUT..."

They're not as stealthy as they think they are.

24. K & R from a straight dude who stands with the LGBT community in their quest
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 12:53 PM by tom_paine
for equal rights.

As Washington, who based on this quote I think would have supported gay marriage, provided he could wrap his 18th-century mind around it, said,

"As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality."
--George Washington

LGBT, this means YOU. You are worthy members of the community and most definitely entitled to equal protections of the civil government and LE.

I guess I never realized, at least never made the connection, that violent anti-LGBT actions spike whenever one of these prominent "state sanctioned" non-violent anti-gay actions comes along (Prop 8, Warren, take your pick...)

Knowing what I know about the human psyche, combined with what science has revealed regarding the hugely swelling number of weak-minded Right-Wing Authoritarians (RWAs), it seems obvious and common-sensical.

http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/

Most RWAs carry hatred and fear of "the other" in their souls, but due to their psychological base profile (it goes without saying that for any generalization, there are exceptions, sometimes many), they are usually incapable of initiating actions without "permission from authority" to form a "posse" against whomever their Fuhrer tells them is the enemy.

In America, where for the first time anti-racism is sort of codified in our public (note I said PUBLIC) mores. Thus, we Americans are used to taking cues in code.

The Common Sense here? Just this: It therefore stands to reason that some percentage of the huge RWA population in America (as high as Nazi Germany, I suspect, or perhaps even higher, yet restrained by the fact that "The Nazi Thing" has been so discredited that if the Bushies want to start it back up on gays and liberals, like ol' Br'er Rabbit from the stories, he just got to find another way), already used to taking orders in code and by virtue of their weak-minded, unquestioningly obedient slavish psychological profile, seething inside to get some permission from authority to form the posse and go after The Other, but too afraid to do it without some guarantee that there will be no consequences (a la the KKK in the 1873-1970 South), get their "permission from authority" through these coded sanctioning actions, even when they aren't intended that way.

Anyone who has ever know a weak-minded Bushie knows, like Nazis, they only believe what they want to believe, and no amount of facts can sway them, no matter how demonstrably untrue and ridiculous the lies they are told by their Bushie authority, usually on TV or radio.

I guess I already knew it intellectually, but your OP hammered it home, laid out specifics, and put forth the idea with brevity, passion and clarity.

28. K & R! This country is not progressing, it's regressing.
Watching Milk this weekend opened my eyes as to how far this country has not come in the last 30 years. The scene that really brought tears to my eyes was when Harvey Milk realized that the statewide vote was coming in two to one against Proposition 6. When he realized his efforts to have voters in the state recognize homosexuals as human beings, as sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, as equals succeeded. What happened in the last 30 years that made that same state take that recognition for granted?

Shame on my state. Shame on everyone who does not have eyes to see, or ears to hear.

Golly, did I just paraphrase Jesus or something?

61. and not coincidently...
in the last 30 years religion has taken a stronger and stronger grip on our society. 30 years ago, when I was 10, religion was something polite people didn't discuss. When I was in high school, we didn't hold prayers before athletic events (or any school gathering, for that matter). Now we can't have a damn election campaign without CNN having some special on the candidates faith. With the way it is going, if religion keeps up this pace, we will start treating gay people like they do in Iran- we will lynch them with the sanction of the churches.

He's saving that title for himself.

What else would you call the leader of a cult of personality who calls for the dehumanization of any he dislikes?

It's not just "the gay," either-- he promotes absolute subjugation of females by males. Trust me, that leads to abuse 100% of the time. For evidence, look up Rick Santorum.

It's WAY past time for the good people of America to be outraged. This is just the latest insult- in the wake of a promise of change, we are handed something even Bush never did.

That's another downfall of copycat threads. They are usually just a continuation of a discussion but, due to the split it just gets disjointed.

But it does make it easier to issue blanket statements such as yours and not counter any points. Perhaps you have in the original and I haven't seen them. If not maybe you should.

53. Truth be told, Julie, the list of "points" in the other thread was pure snakeoil.
I, and several others, responded to them all, one by one.

Here's another point, one alluded to in this counter-thread started by gaspee. That is, that when hatred and bigotry is preached with Bible in hand, or Koran in hand, or some other "Holy Book" in hand, the hatred is made exponentially more powerful by the smarmy self-righteousness and impenetrable dismissiveness of the source, whose aim is to whip up a crowd, a congegration, to exclude, condemn, and punish their chosen group of victims.

We're not dealing with a simple individual, in this case - one attacking another individual. We're dealing with a very powerful group leader, and the attack is on a group, a visible minority.

So Warren isn't just an ordinary bigot, he's a bigot who leads a congregation of 23,000, who claims to speak for God, and who has (on this particular issue) even claimed to speak for all religions and all cultures, past and present. He's a church leader and his arguments aren't arguments from reason, but from his interpretation of the Bible. He is a zealot whose thinking or "reasoning" is a deluded muddle which confuses self with God, which confuses personal opinion and personal judgment with God's judgment. His delusion is reinforced and fed by the size of his congregation, by the increasing scope of his audience, and, unfortunately, now by Obama's choice to honor his leadership. Warren is all over the press, now, using the opportunity that Obama gave him to promote his hateful judgment - to promote his leadership - with the aim to reinforce his judgment in law, as recently done with Prop.8. Which is just the start. Warren has now taken a national leadership role on this issue, and has just posted a 22 minute video "sermon" expressing his hate.

There's just no way this is a good thing.

I can't believe how many people read that tripe and said "thumbs up!" or something like that. It was dismissive and acted like being hateful and bigoted is just a little difference of opinion. I don't see why we don't have someone from the KKK and a Holocaust denier up there too in our attempt to be "tolerant". I hate when tolerance is used as an excuse for this. Edited on Wed Dec-24-08 12:08 PM by Lorien
from a recent article on Warren:

Or take marriage. At his Saddleback Church, wifely submission is official doctrine: The church website tells women to defer to their husband's "leadership" even when he's wrong on important issues, such as finances. Never mind if she's an accountant and he flunked long division, or if she wants to beef up the kids' college fund and he wants to buy shares in the Brooklyn Bridge. The godly answer is supposed to be "yes, dear." Is elevating this male chauvinist how President-elect Obama thanks women, who gave him more than half his votes?

No, I WILL NOT simply say this stuff is "opinion" and counts as nothing more. Those people are trying to strip all non white male Christian heterosexuals of human rights, and NOBODY should be tolerant of such hate! Hell, talk about being "anti-American"!

too late to rec :(

edit

what does it say for this place that these irrefutable deeds (facts!) received only 59% of the rec's that opinion "truth" thread got?

They don't even see the writing on the wall that 'the left' is being set up to be marginalized and as abused as teh gays (ironically enough, both appear to be fine to Obama). Fafblog had it right: http://fafblog.blogspot.com/2008/11/news-in-brief.html

How soon they forget Martin Niemöller's poem...

72. it is left to the imagination, but it starts with unrestrained HATE!!!
"I have a feeling the radicalization of the queer community is just beginning. We didn't start it, but we're sure as hell not going to take it any more."

Radicalization. Doesn't that mean more hate, and isn't hate likely to lead to violence? Especially when the other side is 100% evil. They are bigots and always will be bigots. There is no talking with them, there is no compromise with them. The other side is so evil that even people who don't hate them as much as I do, are also evil. People who defend bigots are also bigots. Even people I might have considered friends or allies, if they defend the bigot, or even Obama for selecting the bigot, they are now enemies.

73. I don't know why you think radicalization means hate.
Why do you think it means hate?

There are many posters on DU who express hate for Bush and Cheney. Is DU declaring a jihad?

75. Which side are you taking?
a) it doesn't mean hate

or

b) hatred is okay, similar to hatred of Bush

As far as a) "this bigoted Jackass" seems like an expression of hate to me, and I am pretty sure that's not the only example. Not that I want to do a search and start naming names or quoting quotes.

As for b) it depends on the action taken, or called for, is it
1) calling him names and/or mocking him
2) exposing his lies and bad policies
3) working to defeat his party in 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008
4) going to rallies to protest the war or a Bush visit
5) calling for violent demonstrations
6) calling for rudeness to people who support Bush or Republicans

I have tried to do numbers 2-4, and probably done #1 even though I think it is childish and probably not helpful. I particularly did not think it helped our anti-war rally for so many people to be there with anti-Bush signs. If we had brought in anti-war Republicans (or RAW as I called them, we might have been more effective). As it was, we were just a crowd of 'people who are not gonna vote for me anyway' in the eyes of Republican politicians.

I have always been against #5 and #6 which seems to be where we are here, at intolerance of people with different views. That goes a step beyond just trying to change or defeat those views, and it's not a positive step IMO.

76. Both.
I don't see how the OP = hate, but even if it did, people explicitly declare their hate on DU daily without it being suggested that they are inciting a "jihad".

78. Not with quite the same numbers or intensity
Not with things like Toasterlad declaring no compromise possible, Lynyrd Skynyrd calling for those who recommended a thread to be tombstoned and Commie Pinko Dirtbag declaring zero tolerance for Warren defenders, etc. or cheering on mobs of shouting protestors who perhaps close down a restaurant over a $100 donation. Maybe our other wars have been this intense - DU does blow up every three months over something. But it seems different when people declare zero tolerance for enemies of the truth, and hatred of them is cheered, and radicalization is predicted or encouraged. Probably the impeachment people are just as jihad like, but not as numerous.

79. No, not the same numbers. Hate for Bushco is declared many times per day, on
most days.

If you think the OP here was a call for a jihad, what actions exactly do you think were called for?

Do you think all protests and movements are jihads?

I already quoted the relevant passage and how I see it. Is it explicit, like "kill all the lawyers", No, but it looks implied to me. All I am saying is "if you're talking about destruction, don't you know that you can count me out."

Although the section I quoted is a little clearer perhaps in context of the OP.
1. Violence
2. Violence
3. Violence
4. death and hospitals
5. violence
6. violence

86. of course not, but just so I am not misunderstood
Here's how I see the OP

"1. 2007 Annual Report on Anti-LGBT Hate Violence Released
Report shows a 24% increase in incidents over 2006"

2)AP: Lesbian's brutal gang rape investigated in Calif.

3)"Assailants target LGBT people of all gender identities with sexual assault," he said. "Such targeting is one of the most cruel, dehumanizing and violent forms of hate violence that our communities experience."

4)NYC immigrant beaten in suspected homophobic attack dies

5)While on a family cruise leaving from Miami Lisa Pond, a healthy 39 year-old, suddenly collapsed. (and died)

6)Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth: An epidemic of homelessness - 40% of homeless youth are LGBT:

do I really need to post more?

...

How's that for some truths for 'ya?"

Of course, radicalization and we're sure as hail not gonna take it any more, don't HAVE to mean a call or a hope for violence, but they very easily could and they certainly seem like a call for intolerance and hostility (even if the hostility is only verbal or written).

70. i disagree. This should be escalated
(disclaimer : i am straight, and not one of those having their rights curtailed for no reason)

The only way any civil rights issue ever moves forward if through escalation, a refusal to back down, and a refusal to stay silent and play nice about it. i feel the same way about all progressive issues, but this is some of the 'low-hanging fruit' in my opinion. Civil rights are civil rights. Marriage is not a civil privelege, and i'm happy to join those calling for escalation.

71. Just an update
I've pretty much decided to leave DU for awhile. Not a swan song post, just a fact. Please don't respond, all righty?

There are a lot of ignoreds on this thread.

Thank you to everyone who gets it. To all those who don't get it, I bet you enjoy a rousing game of smear the queer, don'tcha?

I'm sorry that so many of you seem to think it's OK to gay bash - that it's our intolerance of people who want to see us dead that is the real problem. I haven't heard *that* POV before, nosirreee Bob!

Adios - catch everyone in a few months, maybe.
