Anchorage stops collecting recycled glass
Anchorage stops collecting recycled glass

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- The city of Anchorage is blaming the market for a decision to stop accepting glass for recycling.

Donna Mears of the Solid Waste Services department says there's too much supply for glass and not enough demand.

As of January, the city no longer will accept glass.

Mears says there are limited markets for recycled glass and collection is further hampered by the low price paid and the processing costs.

The city already has stopped accepting plastic bags for recycling.

Anyone else see such things in their area?

1. Big article in yesterday's paper here in Arkansas about the huge drop in the price of
recycled metals, paper, cardboard, plastic, etc. Most have dropped to 1/3 of what they were in July. No real explanation of why such steep decline. Said some local cities were just baling and warehousing the stuff, trying to wait for prices to go back up.

2. It's nationwide

I've read about this in several on-line media sources from all over the country.

My town has stopped taking newspapers and cardboard with a warning that plastic and glass is next.

3. The major problem with Alaska though is everything has to be barged out
There are no facilities to do anything with the recycled products. Pretty much everything is barged in and has to be barged back out to get to a recycle center..
