Editor’s note: This is Cullman County’s No. 10 news story of 2008, as picked by the editorial staff of The Cullman Times.
(Alabama) Controversy surrounding the Cullman County spelling bee made headlines around the Southeast when a father challenged the judge’s ruling.
The controversy arose when Good Hope Elementary School student Krystian Doss spelled the word “kudzu” — or was it “kudcu?”
The judges heard him spell it K-U-D-C-U. His father heard him spell it correctly.
“I know I spelled it right,” Krystian said.
.....
An incident occurred in recent years when the wrong person was crowned winner of the bee.
“That person was awarded being the winner when in actuality it was incorrect,” Schuman said, adding the winner and runner-up switched places following a spell-off at the TV station.
This, she said, is why the school system began recording the event for the sake of accuracy.
