My take on gay marriage:

It's my most complicated belief system:

(1) All persons are entitled to the equal protection of the laws (Fourteenth Amendment).
(2) Separate is inherently not equal. (See, Brown v. Board of Education)

Therefore

It is unconstitutional for straight marriage to be legal while gay marriage is illegal.

Note: This is not a negotiable principle.

1) I agree with you 100%. A lot of people here don't seem to understand this point.

2) I for one am willing to receive crucial economic rights from the federal government even under a separate system. It's that important to me.

2. Civil Unions for Everyone

It is not for the state to make gay marriage "legal" or "illegal".
There is too much of a religious component to marriage for that.
The state should have nothing to do with "marriage".

The civil rights associated with marriage apply to a "civil union".
What is currently called a "marriage license" should be redefined
as a "civil union".

What constitutes a "marriage" is up to the couple.

Separation of church and state. Not only is it the law, it is a very good idea.
