Pastor Rick Warren Likens Gays To Pizza - Ann Curry was "startled"!
After the camera's stopped rolling Warren told this to Curry:

Pastor Rick Warren Likens Gays To Pizza

'Just because I like pizza it doesn't mean I should marry it"

In an interview with Ann Curry on NBC's Dateline, Evangelist Preacher, Rick Warren, who is set to deliver the invocation at Barack Obama's inauguration, equated gays getting married to eating pizza everyday.

"Mr. Warren's relating gays to pedophiles, incest and gay marriage to his incessant craving of sex with women he was not married to caught me a little off guard.," said Ms Curry, "But after the camera stopped filming he went on to make the comparison of gays to pizza, I must say, I was startled."

"Just because I like pizza it doesn't mean I should marry it," said Warren. "Biologically, I am predisposed to enjoy the immaculate melding of mozzarella cheese, red sauce and thick crust baked to tasty perfection. But that doesn't mean I should enter into a lifelong commitment with Sicilian or plain, nor bed it down, nor..

1. I saw that interview. Ann Curry couldn't have kissed Warren's ass more
if she'd tried. She was disgustingly deferential and adoring toward Warren.

3. This protion is in regard to after the interview was over and the camera was off.
I thought I saw Ann Curry's face scrunch up when Warren talked about wanting to screw all the beautiful women he sees. I think she was stunned by his remarks and in this article she is quoted as being "startled".

15. I'm really glad he's being exposed for the hatefull nutcase he is.
Think of all those people who bought his books and think he's just dandy. They're getting their eyes opened now. He's nothing but a jollier Dobson. And you know what, he might even say stupider stuff than Dobson does.

At first Warren was more dangerous because he had an appealing personality to some people and he hid his homophobia in at least his first book. Everybody loved him so he was more likely to draw in the evangelical who was uncomfortable with all of Dobson's anti-gay books and stuff.

But now people can see him for what he is. A hateful nut. So, where do the folks who wish to be led around by a fundy minister go from here? Joel Osteen maybe? Who knows anything about him?

As an aside, my fundy family doesn't think Warren is a REAL fundy. He's too liberal for them. *sigh*

How many crazy, totally gratuitous statements like the pizza reference does it take? The more he talks, the crazier he sounds. I think Warren is very close to hanging himself, figuratively speaking, but it might not be done in time to keep him off the inaugural platform.

22. Rick chooses his own sins ...........Poorly:
Proverbs 23:20-21 warns us, "Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags." Proverbs 28:7 declares, "He who keeps the law is a discerning son, but a companion of gluttons disgraces his father." Proverbs 23:2 proclaims, "put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony."

We are not to let our appetites control us, but rather we are to have control over our appetites. (See Deuteronomy 21:20, Proverbs 23:2, 2 Peter 1:5-7, 2 Timothy 3:1-9, and 2 Corinthians 10:5.) The ability to say “no” to anything in excess—“self-control”—is one of the fruits of the Spirit common to all believers (Galatians 5:22).

Not only is that one of the stupidest analogies I've ever heard, but it speaks volumes about this hog-headed MF. I get the impression that the 'good' rev. hasn't had any serious challenges to his fucked-up theology since earning his degree. Perhaps the faculty at seminary deferred to Warren as a 'legacy' or as a wunderkind due to his father & grandfather being ministers - don't know, don't care. I DO know that it's time for progressive theologians to speak out against Warren's brand of bigotry & hatred in order to show the world that Hoghead Warren does not speak for all of Xianity.

Unfortunately it seems that President-elect Obama has been sold down the river with the same impression that I held before this open communication occurred. When Warren says:

"Just because I like pizza it doesn't mean I should marry it," ... "Biologically, I am predisposed to enjoy the immaculate melding of mozzarella cheese, red sauce and thick crust baked to tasty perfection. ..."

is this perhaps the surfacing of an unconscious and "biologically predisposed" desire on his part to try a PIECE of that gay pizza he keeps going on about? And shouldn't he also order a side of homophobic inclinations to complete his dining experience? Methinks there is more going on under the psychological sheets of this boy than meets the eye - or is it "I" or who really is his "I" anyway?

44. This dovetails pretty well with his reduction of love to anatomical friction
Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 12:39 PM by kenny blankenship
which I explored here

The gist of the "pizza" argument that he's struggling to articulate is that physical pleasure is not the basis of a socially sanctioned relationship. Only God's instruction to get married and have babies can be the basis of a socially recognized legally sanctioned relationship.

Like all homophobes, he reduces same-sex desire to sensory stimulation and physical acts performed on mucus membranes. If Warren ever acknowledges that there is something of an inner intangible, spiritual, psychological nature which draws men and women together in relationship and causes them to need each other, and it's not clear that he does, he refuses to accord the same possibility to homosexuals--that there might be something that would draw us to another of our own gender, even if sex was made impossible. And there you have the root argument of the religious bigots who deny us our full humanity. We try to explain what we are on the inside, they insist none of that exists because it doesn't say so in the Bible. Quite a lot of other things don't exist in the Bible, such as the Western Hemisphere and a spherical Earth, a heliocentric solar system, evolution and the double stranded helix of deoxyribonucleic acid that makes all life possible --but no matter. The Bible is the authority on everything. Bible scholars could have discovered penicillin, electricity, and split the atom unaided by the ungodly whisperings of "empirical science", and just as quickly, but they were just focused on other things.

Whatever else you might say about him it has to be acknowledged that he is a crude, bestial man. I hope that everyone can come to understand that, like all religious totalitarians, he is also a very dangerous man -- dangerous to minorities, and dangerous to democracy.

54. After reading your fascinating post I did more digging in the Warren "sex & pizza" analogy - Read on
It seems that this is something that Garth Brooks once said too (nothing against Garth):

Quote from:

Emotional Analogies and Analogical Inference

Paul Thagard and Cameron Shelley

http://cogsci.uwaterloo.ca/Articles/Pages/emotional-analogies.html

"country music star Garth Brooks: "My job is like what people say about pizza and sex: When it's good, it's great; and even when it's bad, it's still pretty good." Note that this is a multiple analogy, for what its worth."

...........

I am not surprised if Warren had heard this referenced at one time or another. Not to say maybe this isn't even where he came up with it but it sounds like something he was trying to get at. I agree totally with all you said about him being crude. When he said he wanted to have sex with all the pretty women he sees I about fell of my chair! Wonder what his wife thinks about that line? It is one thing to admire an attractive person, but a married man, let alone a Preacher, saying he admits he wants to lay ever good looking woman he sees? Weird to say the least!

Warren's boundaries seem to be cr@p, to me anyway. He's completely ill as ease and somewhat unintelligible as soon as he has to be spontaneous -- as if it takes up too much energy to keep himself together, with nothing much left over to really interact with people.

Tongue-in-cheek is how I read it, but maybe I'm the one here missing something. Or not.

:)

64. I checked twice on Huffington Post and then again on Young's website - seems others are taking this

for the truth too. I guess if it was a spoof then we were all fooled. But it is hard for me to think he would have used Ann Curry as a reference in "quotes" without her permission and some kind of mention of this being false. It will be interesting to see if we hear from Ann Curry about this. I tried to find more from her but found nothing. It did seem logical after the interview Warren gave Curry.

75. If you follow the link to the full version it becomes clear that it is a spoof

I didn't follow it beyond what's reprinted here, but what's reprinted here is very much in line with what he said in the interview with Larry King.

The argument that gays can't be married because their relationship is strictly based on pleasure (like smoking or eating pizza) and pleasure is not why God instituted marriage (pleasure is of course bad) is a live fundamentalist virus that can be found in the wild. Of course, this intentionally reduces gay people and their relationship to only what you can see in a gay porno movie, and with that our personhood vanishes into thin air.

Unless maybe this part, which is called out at the top like an actual quote, really is an actual quote:
“Just because I like pizza it doesn’t mean I should marry it”

and after that Steve Young just went crazy and invented the rest, which gets progressively more outrageous letting the reader know it's satire.

59. Rick Warren just wishes that someone would have sex with his FAT ASS.
Mark my words, this typical Christofascist dick will be involved in some sort of sex scandal in the next 5-10 years.

63. Okay, Warren either doesn't understand or is a bigot
I think we can agree on that. What I just flat don't understand is why he continues to receive such a respectful hearing from all the media outlets. Curry says, well after the fact, that she was "startled," though by this time I would expect just about anyone to be ready for this kind of nonsense. When a racist says racist things such as "some of my best friends" or that this person or that person is "a real credit to his race," the highly-paid camera-talkers know what to say.

But they haven't got the foggiest fuck of a notion how to respond in real time to Warren's particular brand of hate? How do they justify those fat paychecks? As soon as the cameras stop rolling, do they enter some kind of sealed baggie of ignorance and eerything just goes away? Doesn't a thought seep into their little pea-brains that says, "Gee, the next time someone comes on the air and recycles this tired old fear and hatred, I'm going to call them on it."

Because if not, Ann Curry (and Matt Lauer and Diane Sawyer and all the rest of you overpaid fuckheads), why not?

73. That is very unkind of her to act startled. She must reach out with respect,
not treat him like he is in some way unworthy of her highest admiration!

74. There are some things that people put on pizza which are a crime against nature
Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 02:38 PM by jberryhill
Pineapple, for instance.

Pineapple on pizza is an abomination.

(although the Bible itself would forbid cheese and meat on the same pie)

77. Breathtaking Ignorance.
I have come around.

The selection of a moron to give the inagural oration is Obama's first misstep. I don't care how many starving children he has fed. How someone so ignorant could manage to reach 54 years of age is a mystery to me.
