civil unions or whatever ANYONE wants to call it. Equal rights for ALL is the only acceptable solution. Rick Warren should be a non-issue; there are much more important fights to invest our energies on.

I curse Rick Warren and all his works and heartily wish he had not been selected to be part of the inauguration...but I cannot, and will not, throw Barack Obama on the scrap heap, be sorry I voted for him, assume he's going to be just another disappointing politician, or anything like that, because of it. And it saddens me to see so many people here have done just that. Please note: It's not your feelings of anger and disappointment I question...I understand those completely...it's the quickness to discard someone who has deeply disappointed you and yell "NEEEEXT!" that worries me.

The man has not even taken office yet. I cannot throw out the baby with the bath water. I will not show that little faith in someone who has done this one thing I wish with all my heart he had not done. I have to give him a chance to prove, first, that he will give me and the rest of us who voted for him nothing but disappointment. Only then can I fairly give up on him.

But I don't think that will be necessary. I believe he is educable. I really believe that. He's not like Bush, who would find out something he'd done was opposed by many, but stubbornly hold his ground and actually be HAPPY he was pissing people off or ruining their lives.

I think if we speak loudly enough, we can be heard. And I think that even if we can't get Warren kicked out of the inauguration, it doesn't mean the whole four years of an Obama presidency are a wash. We keep making ourselves heard, loud and clear, and point out that we are the same people who voted for him.

I believe there should be a relationhip between this man he elected and his electorate--sometimes he's going to lead us, other times we're going to have to lead him.

This is one of those times.

I honestly believe we have a better chance of that than we would with anyone else we could have elected.

I am willing to work for that.

what I have been formulating in my mind over the past few days. I too believe that Obama is educable. He said during the campaign that he was imperfect, and that he would make mistakes. And so he has. However, my elation over his election is that I believe that we have a president whose feet we can hold to the fire. Now we have to do just that. Although I am straight, I have a gay daughter and many family members who were/are gay (some are no longer with us) and some who have been victims of horrendous acts of hate, so I say these things with a mixture of hope, trepidation and caution, mixed with a lifetime of experience in disappointment . . . and a little more hope.

19. I am an advocate for gay rights...

And yes I am heterosexual, but I rarely bring that fact up when I am talking about gay rights because I think it is irrelevant. We should all support equal rights no matter what our orientation so I don't feel that my own personal orientation is relevant to the issue. Of course when I speak up for gay rights I think there are a lot of people who just assume that I am gay, but that does not bother me one bit. People can assume all they want, but there is nothing wrong with being gay so if people want to think that I am gay that is fine by me.

As I've said repeatedly, folks that're GLBT have all the rights that I have and NONE of them should be abridged by the abuse of the 'majority'. I do not believe that our system of governance should permit the abridgment of ANYONE'S rights without due process and then irrespective of WHO they are in terms of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, ideology, sexual orientation, or even HEIGHT. ("Short people go no reason to...")

I view government laws regarding 'marriage' technically as ENTITLEMENTS (privileges) and, as such, granted inequitably and discriminatory in an inherently unethical and illegal fashion.

57. There used to be ads for the armed forces saying they were

'An Army of One' (meaning the person signing up, who was really going to benefit or something).

Anyway, the post I was responding to was wishing for an army of people in support of GLBT, and I made a reference to that old ad/hoped to imply that I would stand up for them, even if it was me by myself (which I know isn't the case, hence this reminder from all of the good folks on DU).

I think our dear friends in the GLBT community are just going to have to keep seeing the love until they stop feeling invisible/ignored/have their rights respected.

We have five children...a combination of hers, mine, and ours.
Of my two stepsons, one is straight and one is gay. Neither is married.
The straight stepson is the eldest. He got his girlfriend pregnant and they tried living together but have since separated. To put it kindly, I believe they dislike each other quite a bit at this point three years down the road. There have been police involved in breaking up the arguments, restraining orders, clothes and belongings thrown on sidewalks, ad nauseum. The boy hardly ever sees his child because he feels it does the child harm seeing the constant fighting. He's miserable and the baby basically no longer has two parents.

The younger step has been in a committed relationship for about as long as this thing with his brother has been going on. He and his partner own a home and rarely disagree. When they do, they iron it out. The partner has been an inexhaustable help to my wife and I, as well as to his own parents. He's a welcome addition to my family. Ironically, during elder brother's difficulties he has been staying in a spare bedroom at the home of his little brother and his partner.

To me (as to all of you) it is clear as a bell which of my two stepsons should be married but beyond all reason the one who shouldn't marry is the one who would have the state's blessing, while the one who should marry doesn't.

I'm on their side, and yours. We'll get it done.
