DU Tech question: can I start a new member on my computer,
..without losing my own membership? I want to start a friend here who does not have her own computer (yet), she uses mine sometimes and the library's at other times. Thanks

1. Email Skinner and let him know what you plan to do.
Because your new account will look like a sockpuppet which is against the rules.

I had to do that when I asked about my daughter joining and I know there are couples here who use the same computer.

4. A second account.
You're not allowed to do that because people had created them to be disruptive.

8. Ah... thanks again
absolutely not my intention to be disruptive...hell, if truth be told, if that were my goal I would only wind up looking twice as dumb as opposed to twice as disruptive. This is for my step-kid who keeps pestering me to post her thoughts here... If this is possible I want to offer her this option as a way to learn...I think it would be good for her, (obviously).

2. I'm not really sure.. but I think it should just be a matter of logging in again
under your ID after she is done.

6. That's kinda what I think but I thought it wise to check first.
...here in GD seemed as good a place as any to check...as you see I have already learned it may violate a rule...gonna have to re-look at the rules, it's been awhile...thanks notadmmblnd

5. Sure, just don't click the "remember me" button, or use multiple browser profiles
The only issue is that one user's cookie will override another user's default login.

However, if you use a real browser like Firefox you can have multiple profiles on one computer so that your cookies don't clobber each other.

7. Does that mean that probably on person is here under various names? In other words, if they get tom
tomb-stoned under one name, they could just rejoin under another new name?

9. OH hell, I never thought about that...
I seem to have found a can of worms here... now I am glad I asked! (And equally glad I have not given my step kid permission to post stuff under my name...she is still young enough to be a know-it-all and is just argumentative enough to get me tomb-stoned!!!)

13. I honestly don't know how tombstoning works
It's not really something I've paid much attention to. If they block by IP address it would block both of you, though they shouldn't do that because so many people NAT now.

17. I think a disruptor is caught by the mods and warned first
...and we have the "alert" button which I have used to draw attention to the occasional obvious freeper but like you I am not sure how all that works either. Hell, I feel bad enough when a thread I am in gets yanked by the mods...how embarrassing would it be to get a warning!

11. I'll keep that in mind, thanks dmsg
I have the "remember me" button on now...if my step kid decides to join up, (This should be her decision after all), that is the first thing I'll need to turn off. Thanks for pointing that out.

14. Don't forget to turn off the "remember me" function in the log-in...
...if you have it turned on as I do shadowknows69. Although I am not a computer tech type, I have had my share of bugaboos and if I can avoid another by doing this one simple thing then that is what I shall do. (I am not even sure that my step-kid will want to sign on here yet, I was only researching the option and...well you can see it has turned into a worthy bit of research indeed!)

12. Only if you plan on recommending your own threads,
and engage in one-sided debates with yourself.

I debate myself all the time... Usually in public places. It sucks when one side gets violent though, it's a lose-lose situation for me.
