Madoff, Under House Arrest, Agrees to Security ‘to Prevent Harm or Flight’

Under a new bail agreement, Bernard L. Madoff will be placed under 24-hour house arrest at his East Side apartment and will hire a team of security guards to watch his apartment building around the clock, federal prosecutors said on Friday.

The new restrictions on Mr. Madoff’s movements appear intended to protect as well as confine him. In a letter delivered by hand to Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein, prosecutors said the guards were necessary “to prevent harm or flight.”

Former prosecutors said that such language was unusual and could reflect threats received by Mr. Madoff, who has received widespread condemnation since his arrest last week in a $50 billion financial fraud. A front-page headline earlier this week in The New York Post referred to Mr. Madoff as “The Most Hated Man in NY.”

Mr. Madoff’s wife, Ruth, will pay for the guards, according to the new agreement. Prosecutors must approve the security firm that provides them.

Ira Lee Sorkin, one of Mr. Madoff’s lawyers, said that Mr. Madoff had not objected to the changed bail conditions. Until Wednesday, Mr. Madoff had been allowed to travel without restriction throughout southern New York, Long Island and Connecticut. After that, he was restricted to his home in Manhattan from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m.

3. Martha get prison, this guy get house arrest.
Though I'm glad the taxpayers aren't paying for his guards. But I'm sure he's spending his time creativly.

5. Unless it turns out Madoff
is dying of cancer and only has days to live he should be in jail, and not one of those white-collar, country-club jails. The judge who allowed house arrest should be disbarred and banned from the bench.
