2. A name server is a company that
when your domain is put in the address bar, serves up your site.

8. The name server and website host
are not necessarily one and the same. You can have your name server redirect your domain name to the host server. Mine was parked at a particular name server and when I moved my site, I went into my account and redirected the server to the new host.
A name server hosts a multitude of domain names..godaddy.com is a name server. Sometimes a website host will also be the name server. That's what I have now, but I had to transfer my domain name to the website host in order for them to be my name server.

15. A name server translates canonical name to IP address.
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 07:17 PM by TahitiNut
Client-server interactions in ALL IP protocols (SMTP, HTTP, FTP, etc.) take place between IP addresses ... through routers. Thus, the client (e.g. web browser) must translate each canonical name (e.g. everything between the double slash "//" and 1st single slash "/" in a URL) to an IP address before any message (packet) is sent.

Internet hosting services provide 'primary' ("authoritative") name servers and ISPs have secondary name servers that cache the information.

Wanna talk about IANA?

16. Compare w/democrats.org
The Dem. National Committee website just has a normal profile w/only 1 domain. It makes the tangle of sites surrounding the RNC look all the more abnormal & suspicious.

Democrats.org lookup - http://www.robtex.com/dns/democrats.org.html

Gop.org lookup - http://www.robtex.com/dns/gop.org.html

11. Is that unusual?
It seems like most of these domains don't even go anywhere. Why would they need all these domains w/o any actual website?

Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 07:10 PM by Atman
Or to hedge their bets for future use. I own half a dozen names I don't use.

18. Thanks
It just looks weird to have 100's of domains for one organization. But I'm way out of my league here, so if you say it's not unusual, it probably isn't. I hope the tech-savvy DU'ers can figure it out!
