The right is still strong ..... liberal talk station shut down in Columbus, OH
Edited on Fri Dec-19-08 11:59 AM by Botany
WVKO 1580 AM in Columbus, OH will become St. Gabreial Radio
on 1/1/09 all Catholic talk all the time. We already have an
all Catholic AM station too .... this is being done over the holidays
when the on air people are on vacation to keep the complaints down too.

WVKO still was struggling but when we brought Steph Miller to town
it was 3,000 + a SRO crowd .... when we had a meet up about 2 weeks
ago at a local theater people we turned away because of fire laws.

When the same theater held a debate watching party it was a sell out.

When one fruit company started to buy ad time on the station it did so
well that it's competitor has now bought time too.

This area just went blue and voted for Obama and for the 1st time in
40+ years elected a dem to congress .... Mary Jo Kilroy.

We need the fairness doctrine back now.

1. I do not know if the fairness doctrine is the answer but
ownership rules really need to be changed.

5. We are the majority and yet we get 99 right wing talkers and religious
talkers to every 1 progressive ..... that way it seems as if you just listen
to the radio the right wing is the majority.

Radio is very important because not everybody can buy pod casts, listen
on the net, or buy sat. radio.

21. I totally agree. I hugely support change
I am not yet convinced that a fairness doctrine is the way to go. Clear channel owning 1250 radio stations, cumulus with 500, NPR with a huge network and countless religious stations is a huge problem. I honestly doubt that you could get a fairness doctrine through congress that had any teeth and could be truly enforced.

2. The Catholic Church doesn't like the competition?
Why are they purchasing radio stations?

Here's a link to his blog.

We lost our Air America station about a year ago.

4. This happened to the AAR affiliate in Dallas, too
One day, I'm listening to Randi Rhodes during rush hour. Next day, she's gone - replaced by a couple of priests discussing some doctrinal issues.

8. This is the second time this has happened in Columbus
We worked real hard to get liberal radio back on the air
and it gets shut down just as it was taking off.

7. how many times do we have to get slaped to learn that we can not
play nice with certain parts of the right .... the only thing they understand
is raw naked power. They are willing to throw money away to keep our
side from having a voice.

12. I know you are right but:
Having Rachel Maddow in the PM give the news or Steph Miller and company
having fun and giving the real story in the AM .... is like comfort food.

Hannity, Rush, and company make me sick w/ their jobs of spreading lies and hate.

19. Oh I agree, but I'm just sayin'
they (Rush and the other scum) are repulsive to listen to, but they are hurting themselves and they are too stupid to realize it.

I do agree that Rachael and Stephanie are easy to listen to.

11. Sorry to say the Fairness Doctrine won't do anything to help
It comes down to station ownership rules. You have to have local ownership and advertising and it's just not possible today. Large conglomerates who can own multiple stations in a market and hundreds around the country use their financial influence to sell the market something they don't want and don't really need.

The other side of that would be to institute an accuracy in reporting standard with rational and enforceable capabilities. Remember the Fox affiliate in FLA and the report on Bovine Growth Hormone usage and the potential danger? The SC said it was just fine to report information that had no basis in fact.

Remember the most important thing, ANY commercial media makes it's money by selling advertising. They are the customers and profit center. If they can give you a shit sandwich and make money from it, that's all they'll give you.

15. This was a locally owned station .....
.... the man started it on a shoe string but it was growing and getting
some solid advertising support and the listeners were very loyal to the
sponsors ..... the buy out was done very fast and lots of out of state money
came in to buy the station .... I do not the eaxct details .... it was right out of
the blue.

Guaranteed that the new station will lose money.

20. That's what they did to the Air America station in Phoenix, too.
Fortunately, it ended up spawning NovaM Radio.

This is where your church donations go.
