Term limit pledge drove Brownback's decision to bow out

Brownback won’t seek re-election to Senate
By STEVE KRASKE
The Kansas City Star

Kansas Republican Sam Brownback announced Thursday that he will not seek a third term in the Senate, saying he owed it to the state's residents to keep his word and retire.

Sam Brownback is only 52 and has a job he loves.

But on Thursday, the Kansas Republican began the process of walking away from his seat in the U.S. Senate, announcing that he would not seek re-election in 2010.

The reason? A term limits pledge he signed in 1996.

Within minutes of his announcement, six-term Republican congressman Jerry Moran of Hays declared that he was entering the Senate race to replace Brownback. One other potential contender: seven-term GOP congressman Todd Tiahrt of Wichita.

On the Democratic side, one question looms: Will Gov. Kathleen Sebelius seek to extend her political career by attempting to move to the Senate?

“I know she hasn’t ruled it out,” Kansas Democratic Party chairman Larry Gates said.

2. I give credit to any politician who honors their term limits pledge
Seeing as how so many of them have abandoned their term limits promises in the past.

3. Yeah. Sure. Term limits. Whatever.
If the Republicans weren't in such a minority, I wonder if Mr. Brownback's "pledge" might not have gotten forgotten in all the excitement? But whatever, as long as he's gone. Can he take the equally worthless Pat Roberts with him when he leaves?
