Sen. Shelby (Jerk, AL) is BuzzFlash 'GOP Hypocrite of the Week'
Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy.
Very depressing that he is one of my senators, though.
:-(

Richard Shelby

Welcome back to the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week.

We thought the South lost the Civil War, but Neo-Confederates such as Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama are conspiring with foreign auto manufacturers to undermine the American economy.

As author Michael Lind notes in a Salon commentary entitled "The Economic Civil War":

The most shocking thing about the alliance between the Southern states and America's friendly but earnest economic rivals to destroy America's most important industry is the fact that so few people find it shocking….Now with the help of Nissan, Toyota, and BMW, the South is trying to replace Detroit as the center of U.S. automobile production, using low wages, anti-union laws, and low taxes to benefit from the outsourcing of industry from societies more advanced than the South, like Japan and Germany. The economic Axis is collaborating with the neo-Confederates against their common opponent -- the American Union. If they succeed, the losers will be not only non-Southern regions in the U.S., but the majority of Southerners of all races, whose interest in decent wages, good education, and adequate public services have almost always been sacrificed to the greed of the well-connected few by Southern statehouse gangs.

You might call the undermining of the American economy and outsourcing of our corporate ownership to foreign countries…well, un-American. And you would be right.

Richard Shelby, who once was a Democrat before he joined the Grand Hypocrisy Party, is adamantly opposed to government assistance for the domestic Detroit automobile industry that is a backbone of our economy.

In late 2008 he opposed a Federal government bridge loan for US-owned auto companies, saying: "We don't need government - governmental subsidies for manufacturing in this country. It's the French model, it's the wrong road. We will pay for it. The average American taxpayer is going to pay dearly for this, if I'm not wrong." However, foreign-owned auto manufacturers Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Toyota, and Hyundai received approximately $788 million in government subsidies in the cities of Vance, Lincoln, Huntsville, and Montgomery in Shelby's home state of Alabama, according to analysis by Good Jobs First. Good Jobs First executive Director Greg LeRoy pointed out that "while proposed federal aid to the Big 3 would take the form of a loan, the vast majority of subsidies to foreign auto plants were taxpayer gifts such as property and sales tax exemptions, income tax credits, infrastructure aid, land discounts, and training grants."

Richard Shelby's American flag pin is for sale to the foreign company with the highest bid. That's not patriotism; that's economic treason.

Shelby and his Southern GOP colleagues are willing to subsidize foreign companies who pay low wages, but not American businesses that employ our citizens.

That's not only makes Shelby the BuzzFlash GOP Hypocrite of the Week, but also makes him a danger to our national economic well-being.

Remember our motto: So many Republican hypocrites, so little time.

Catch up with you soon.

1. My letter to Senator Dick Shelby
Dear Senator Richard Shelby,

Given your stance on the U.S. Auto Industry loans, my family and I have chosen to boycott your state.

In fact, I am urging everyone I know, both friends and business associates, to boycott Alabama.

With the fact that Alabama receives 1.63 tax dollars for every 1 tax dollar paid to the Federal government, or $9,265 per capita, I find it appalling that you have chosen to stand against honest, hard working, American taxpayers.
(See http://www.nemw.org/taxburd.htm )

You were recently quoted as stating that "The GM, Ford and Chrysler business model won’t work, it never worked".

While perhaps this is a paraphrase, I think it is more than a fair representation of the dis-information you are spreading at the expense of middle class American families.

Specifically, if what you say is true, then General Motors and Ford would not have been in business for over 100 years and Chrysler would not have been in business for over 83 years. The model has made them billions of dollars over many of those years. The model has worked and is working. The economy and the government are the problem - not the American people.

But, unbelievably, you have chosen to put an additional 2 to 3 million U.S. jobs at risk per auto maker - even as we, the U.S. taxpayer, rescue Wall Street without any recourse in getting those tax dollars back since that wasn't a loan, but rather a true bail out.

In the future, I hope our government has the spine to address this dire and urgent situation and chooses not to kick the can down the road as you have chosen. We need someone to stand tall for hard working Americans and you have failed, sir.

Until then, I am letting everyone know: Boycott Alabama!

4. Let's hope it stays there until
"Dick" resigns.

He is the new "Newt Gingrich" raising tons of money for the DNC everytime his turncoat ass shows up on TV.

The prick was a Democrat, then changed parties.

Now he's trying to pimp the UAW.

It is what it is.
