Skeptics cool on warming warning

Former Vice President Al Gore -- who won an Oscar for his documentary on climate change -- warned U.S. lawmakers Wednesday if they did not act on global warming there would be a "true planetary emergency."

But he got a chilly reception off some Republicans, including Texas lawmaker Joe Barton, who told him: "You're not just off a little, you're totally wrong."

14. he's a slime...
According to opensecrets.org, a watchdog group that monitors monetary contributions to politicians, Barton alone has received close to $2 million in campaign contributions from energy companies and their political action committees since he has been in office. The oil and gas industry has been the top industry contributor to his campaign. This does not include contributions from individuals who work for petrochemical companies, though. Last year, employees from Anadarko Petroleum alone, contributed $50,000, opensecrets.org reports.

The New Republic magazine has called Barton a "Big Oil lackey." According to TNR writer Michael Crowley, "Barton champions a pro-industry agenda with no apparent concern for appearances. Just two months after , he exploited concerns over energy supplies in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to jam through still more energy subsidies, ease environmental regulations on refineries, and press for more offshore oil and gas drilling."

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Barton was one of only 11 House members to vote against the Hurricane Katrina Emergency Relief bill passed by Congress and signed by President Bush on September 8, 2005. This came one day after he told Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour that "Whatever you need from the federal government... we'll do everything we can to make it happen sooner rather than later and bigger rather than smaller."

one of his quotes---
"As long as I am chairman, is off the table indefinitely. I don't want there to be any uncertainty about that." — Congressional hearing entitled, "National Energy Policy: Coal" Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality (March 14, 2001)

yeah, he's a peach alright!

7. Barton is owned 100% by the oil lobby.
And he's grown more and more corrupt the longer he's been in congress. I covered his first run for Congress in 1984, and got to know him fairly well as a reporter. Back then, even though I vehemently disagreed with his politics, I found him honorable and earnest.

That was a very, very long time ago. All I can do is shake my head at the despicable individual he's become.

And Joe, if this ever gets back to you--and it well may--Robin Black says shame on you. I remember I time when you knew better.

8. I never understood the denial!
This isn't a new subject! We've been hearing about this for decades! That's why California has such strong anti-pollution laws!

Damn! I remember hearing about this in my Weekly Reader in 3rd grade, FCOL!!!

18. The denial is bought and paid for by the oil and gas companies
and they own almost everything. Pick up a Newsweek or Time. Tune into any TV station. Oil and gas and coal and the other extraction industies own the world!

That's why w is sitting in the White House next to Dick Cheney. Oil and gas.

10. someone call Norway
and tell them that a random congressman from Texas has scientifically debunked Climate Change. I mean if that doesn't merit a Nobel Prize, then I don't know what does. In fact, I think he should get all of the prizes (well, not sure how to get medicine invoked, but surely there is a way)
