Maybe we should separate church and state and not have invocations?
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 09:48 PM by originalpckelly
I think it's pretty fucking ridiculous that we have prayers at the beginning of every day in Congress. I remember seeing the invocation that's done each day in Congress for the first time, it was completely surprising to me. I couldn't believe that on public property during a legislative session, we'd have prayer.

1. Too logical. How can you be effectively divisive without religion?
They can't control us unless they can divide us.

If we didn't have religious invocations, we might have a chance of being a free, civilized society, and that's not about to happen. The world is ruled by assholes.

3. It does seem to make sense that if kids can't pray...
because of separation of church/state, that legislators shouldn't.

4. That's the way I feel about it.

I realize that having invocations and benedictions at inaugurations and other public events has become traditional, but I don't like it. Prayers just don't belong at the ceremonies of a supposedly secular government. Somebody always gets pissed off because they feel their religion was slighted or somebody else's religion was improperly favored. Ditch the preachers altogether. They don't belong in the first place.

7. If they want to pray, do it before they go to the legislature...
that way everyone can do what they want to along those routes.

5. Fine by me. But until then, I'm okay with picking boring apolitical pastors for the job.

Hint: It's not the Catholics or the Baptists.

10. I agree. Church. State. Separate - keep it separated. Keep religion private. Yes!

12. That they are even having prayer is a violation of the Constitution.
And it really pisses me off! Why has this not been brought to court? That's what I want to know. :grr:
