13. In all honesty.
I think the straight folks should stay out of this argument if they don't feel even somewhat as betrayed as the GLBT community does. Rick Warren is a divisive, hateful person, not just in the way he feels about equality, but in a lot of ways.

I'm sickened by this choice and would never presume to tell my GLBT friends here that they need to 'get over it'.

Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 08:50 PM by hlthe2b
without a doubt. DU attitudes, (if better than the world at large, as some would suggest) only underscores this... And while morbidly obese of both genders may be similarly ridiculed, I have to say that women are far more discriminated against than men at more moderate obesity levels. Granted there are regions of the country where gays/lesbians are going to be the discriminated scape goats "of choice."

Having said that, I think pitting one discriminated group against another is incredibly wrong. We need to be sensitive to each and fight for the equal rights and dignity of each.

71. If you mean marriage, yes certainly, but fat people can be fired
without cause (or not hired) because of appearances in many states... It is harder to do so with race, but that does persist. Both groups are also the victims of hate crimes, which are clearly violations of civil rights.

But, the point I am trying to make is that those discriminated should not be trying to decide who is most at risk, but banding together. This seming "one-upmanship" is really counter productive.

32. No. It's like saying if an atheist doesn't like being discriminated
against, he can believe shit - or say he believes shit. All the belief/faith stuff is a conscious decision whereas sexual orientation is not, or so I've been told.

If you were not if fact testing me, then I take it back about the other being the dumbest question I've read.

Yeah, just change your beliefs at the drop of a hat. Not only is that intellectually dishonest, it's intellectually impossible.

66. I think what the poster is trying to convey, is that it's easier to lie about religious belief,
than it is to live a closeted life due to your sexual orientation and/or never have the opportunity to live with the one you love.

It's a relatively recent freedom for atheists to come out and say that they are. In the 50's well, you just shut your mouth and sat in that pew every Sunday along with everyone else. The rest of the week was yours though. Not so for gay people.

70. No,
he said it was a "conscious decision", implying that if you don't the like the treatment you receive for being an atheist, you can just willfully believe. Not possible.

You can't just wake up one morning and CHOOSE to believe, anymore than you can just CHOOSE to like the taste spinach. Human beings are not wired that way. It is intellectually impossible.

26. Gay people for sure. The hate crime stats the FBI puts out has them at the top of the list.
But atheists are discriminated against in many ways as well, especially those who live in small, rural fundie towns. In some communities, especially if you have kids, not belonging to a church is social suicide, and the kids get beaten up and bullied at school. Atheists get passed over for promotions, raises, and they can't be president either.

75. Yup, social suicide for children of atheists in Wheaton, IL
plus the less tangible side effects of bullying and isolation.

I speak from experience. My 12 year old was grateful to move from Wheaton (home of Billy Graham and other uber evangelicals), but feels even more socially isolated in our new town (Denny Hastert land), than before where she grew up with the kids who knew her values were solid even if she wasn't a believer. They would "generously" (direct quote from 2 of her friends' parents) overlook her lack of church participation and "allow" my daughter an hour to "play" with their kids every so often.... :(

While I would never denigrate the ostracism and outright hatred towards gays, personally, I would put the denigration and ostracism of atheists on an equal playing field.

It's painful. It exists. I experience it every day as do my children.

The realities are stark enough to indicate that atheists are enmeshed in at least as great a struggle as gays. We can't hold public office, we can never come out to our clients, we're Americas but we're the most scorned social group in every study conducted.

Being atheist may be a cause for informal bigotry (as in being a handicap in running for office).

But being an atheist has never denied me any civil rights. Being gay has.

33. It really depends what you are talking about when you say "discriminated"
There are quite a few openly gay politicians, I've been told there is one openly atheist politician but I've forgotten his name.

On the other hand straight atheists can pretty much marry who they want to and it's probably somewhat easier to stay closeted as an atheist than as a gay.

Depending on where you live coming out as either atheist or gay can create serious trouble in your life.

Probably on the whole more gays though.

37. I don't know about "discrimination" but as far as acceptance goes..
I think gays are more accepted than atheists in part to t.v. and media. It's become common and really not that big of a deal to see gay people on t.v. or in movies. However, when is the last time you've seen a character on t.v. that was an open atheist? Atheists are demonized by all religions because
a lack of religious beliefs is a greater threat to them than a person being gay. I don't think there has been a president that has stated that gays should not have the right to be a U.S. citizen, like Pres. Bush, Sr. has said regarding atheists. I think gays, however, are more openly discriminated against, because atheists tend to stay "in the closet" out of fear. This is merely my perception.

I just get frustrated not at the position, I am 100% FOR same-sex marriage, but at the attitude people take to the issue. I don't get the problem with dialogue. many of these people are not evil Nazis, They, Warren included, are for the most part good people with misguided beliefs because of upbringing and the influence of others. shunning them doesn't work, all my reading seems to say that isolation makes such people become more extreme and fanatical.

Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 10:09 PM by JohnnieGordon
Being an atheist hasn't really been an obstacle in life at all, it pretty much never comes up. Being gay got me viciously picked on in jr high to the point I skipped 43 days in the 9th grade. And I did end up dropping out of high school, which is quite common for gays, I think it's something like 1 in 4. Homophobia has had a profound effect on my life.

65. Is this one of those trick questions? Like which came first,
the bear or the woods?

67. I'd have to guess being gay
is more discriminated against, though there isn't a competition, and it's possible to be both. I'm an atheist and I was easily able to get married.

84. This only matters if you define one as being Atheist at birth.
That alone merits discussion.

Are we all atheist at birth? Are just some of us?
