"Analysis: War Anniversary a Milestone"
Four years ago Tuesday, I lay on my bed in the Al-Rashid Hotel in Baghdad as dawn broke, heard the wail of sirens and saw the flash of anti-aircraft fire, and then a dull explosion shuddered from a few miles away.

A costly war had begun. Since that day, the start of the U.S. invasion, more than 3,200 American soldiers have been killed and uncounted tens of thousands of Iraqis.

Friends and colleagues, sources, acquaintances or their relatives have been killed or maimed. Others I knew then have gone into exile, losing their homes and their livelihoods. And yes, an awful dictator has been hanged and a regime that abused its people has been destroyed.

Some people ask, why write about a fourth anniversary of anything: It is not a round number, it is too soon to begin measuring the historical moment of an event. Are we going to do the big anniversary "thing" every year?
