Look who predicted the banking crisis--like 2 centuries ago!
'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.'

Thomas Jefferson--1802!!

Though not perfect, Jefferson was right on SO many issues, including religion's proper role in government (i.e. none), freedom of the press, etc. etc., if it hadn't been for the fact that he had grown up in the 18th century and a child of the social covenants of the era, he would have been a human crystal ball.

1. And he also said this:
"...crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country. Today, instead, the aristocracy of the corporation has grown to full maturity, wielding power over the state and its laws in the service of corporate aims.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

2. Hamilton, his nemesis, was far shrewder.

10. Hamilton LOVED that idea of enslaving the masses
"Hamilton's financial system...had two objects: First, as a puzzle, to exclude popular understanding and inquiry; Second, as a machine for corruption of the legislature; for he avowed the opinion, that man could be governed only by one of two motives only, force or interest; force he observed, in this country was out of the question, and the interests, therefore, of the members must be laid hold of, to keep the legislature in unison with the executive." -- Thomas Jefferson (Feb. 4, 1818).

12. Jefferson only loved the idea of enslaving dozens.
Hamilton opposed slavery his entire life.

3. Jefferson saw the danger of Central Banks.

Europe had paid the price many times before.

Debasement of hard currency and eventual Depression and Hyperinflation is not a new phenomenon.

If it doesn't happen here, it will be a reversal of History.

5. The first part of the OP's quote is correct:
Edited on Sun Dec-14-08 09:30 AM by DeSwiss
Thomas Jefferson did say:

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.... The issuing powers should be taken from the banks and restored to the people to whom it properly belongs. - Thomas Jefferson

- As for the rest of it, I see that part as irrelevant to the reality -- which is not only true, but happening as we speak.....

9. Thanks for the heads up. I've quoted this myself, and while it is well documented that
this was an approximation of his sentiment, it is not a direct quote.

13. My bad. You're right
This is the first time I have heard of people putting words in Jefferson's mouth.
I will be more careful in the future.

6. Actually, that was debunked by Snopes
here you go.
http://www.snopes.com/quotes/jefferson/banks.asp

I followed a link and read a whole bunch of stuff that became more and more disturbing from a thread started here on DU a couple of days ago. Come to find out this is a right wing group who wants to sell you something. I don't know where the link is; but, some great DUer debunked it with Snopes.

Reminder to self: What a great web site, must use often

The parallels are even more eery :wow:

History seems doomed to continue repeating itself.
