Hey NE Duers without power
Edited on Sat Dec-13-08 05:24 PM by malaise

Enjoy!

Please be very careful with the candles. :grouphug:

A massive ice storm roared into the northeast United States Friday, toppling trees, closing schools and leaving more than 1.25 million homes and businesses without power.

The storm hit seven states, striking New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maine and New York the hardest. State of emergencies were declared in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, as authorities anticipated that it could be several days before power could be restored.

In New Hampshire alone, more than 400,000 hydro customers were without power, meaning more than half the state was in darkness. By comparison, only 55,000 customers in New Hampshire lost power during the 1998 ice storm.

8. Why would you need power lines for cell phones
Now if you lost the cell tower, that's another problem.

If you have a generator, DSL, and a computer..
getting online shouldn't be a problem if the phone lines are still working.

12. Now I'm learning something
I never lost cell use when we lost power during hurricanes. Maybe my tower had power.

28. 12-24 hr battery power....
....so you need a prolonged outage. I was powerless for 11 days in the '98 ice storm, and believe me, they were dead. POTC (plain old twisted copper) never went down. You should see the racks of wet cells the telephone company has backing them up.

11. They have shelters in some areas.
But I have pets. I would never leave my cat and dog alone to go to a shelter.

29. I feel the same way. Would never leave my dog.
But I've been there and it does get mighty cold, so having dogs sure helps during a three-dog night. Hope you have your heat back...:-(

32. That is very good news! I know how cold it has gotten and I've experienced it, myself...
Edited on Sun Dec-14-08 01:47 PM by Rhiannon12866
It was for about a day and a half, if I recall. I've never been so cold... Fortunately, I wasn't alone and there were three dogs with me, too... :loveya:

And the pups are very cute, but you'd need three of that size or else a very large one... ;)

On edit: found one!:loveya:

16. I will be the rude one
That is idiotic for two reasons. The harm you would do your family and loved ones if you die. And, that you would be putting innocent rescuers at risk because of your stupidity, when you are near death and finally realize you do want to live regardless of your pets.

People need to go to shelters.

10. We lost power for 6 days after Hurricane Ike hit Central Ohio. I still have not re-filled
Edited on Sat Dec-13-08 05:32 PM by mod mom
my free standing freezer. I lost several hundred dollars of food (and we don't eat mammals, fish or seafood) and I decided not worth investing when a storm could take it all away so quickly.

Luckily ours was in the summer so we had longer light and no need for heat. We hardly ever use a/c due to large trees and many windows. The worst for us was that we have a tankless water heater which although gas is computerized w electricity. We had to heat h2o on the gas stove to bath. I really missed showers.

Stay warm!

It's a waste of money.

14. Mine's been out for 353 days!
I finally got the power company out yesterday. But it'll be at least three months before I get it turned on. I've learned just how convenient it is to have.

21. Yeah, it's been "fun".
I have to say that I bought a piece of land. I went from living in a nice house to living in an rv. I'm not as enthusiastic about it as I was. I've done this before, but thought things would go smoother this time. No. Things don't move quickly in politics nor real estate.

Yes, I'm on a generator. But it's anything but easy. Or cheap. I changed the oil this morning, in the rain.

Hey, if I play my cards right, this property will net me a million. I am not kidding. But since money isn't my goal, it's not helping me. But I will have power in not too long. Phew. I had to get that off my chest. Thanks for asking.

24. What a good idea!
I haven't. But now that my planning is beginning to move forward I intend to post some of it on forums. I'm starting out with a big garage and shop. I belong to a machinists forum, and they have a "show us your shop" forum. But it's rural, so I will probably post it in the rural forum on DU. The house is going to be super cool. I'm getting excited. I've even hired an interior designer to help out where I need it.

But in the meantime, it's mud, cold, and rv living. But I do have an ocean view. :)

25. Get yourself a blogspot
Take pics of your view. Blog your funny moments that weren't so funny when they happened. What you've learned about developing property. It would be great reading.

27. Yeah, like the o-ring that let my diesel generator sieze.
Oh man. I've had enough amazing planning department adventures, let alone being in the middle of a lawsuit that is going all the way to the state of California. Lots. Including how I knew about the property even though it wasn't on the market. All boring stuff, but evidently not.

I think it would be great therapy. Thanks! I'll look around for a blogspot.

17. Yep, Dad just took some pics from Keene
and a little north of there, he says it is bad. Alot worse than 1998. (I got my dates mixed up in another thread, that did happen in VT, NH in January 1998) I was up there visiting at the time. I can't imagine it being much worse than '98. The tops were sheared off of most of the trees between VT and Concord NH.

Stay safe Northeasterners!! :grouphug:
