Battlestar Galactica this week: "I serve at the pleasure of the president..."
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 12:24 PM by calipendence
When I saw this episode yesterday on my PVR, I found it amazing that they could weave this line into the story in such a timely manner, given current events that have happened since January 12th this year. Did they actually write this line and shoot it after that time, or is it airing this week a big coincidence. If it was in the can already, I have to believe that the editors were saying this is one scene that we are NOT going to cut, given this whole season having a lot of analogies as to what is happening in the world today.

From:

...

The scene starts out zooming in on the Colonial One, before switching inside, to show the president's aide reporting, "Baltar was instrumental in the Cylon attack on the colonies.", as she hands some documents to the prosecutor, then continues, "The president wants him charged with genocide." The prosecutor replies, "I can't make it stick. There's no evidence of his involvement.", but the president's aide interrupts her with, "The president saw him, with one of the Sixes on Caprica ...before the attack." The prosecutor is offended, so she asks, "You really want me to put Laura Roslin on the stand to testify about her drug induced visions?" The president's aide replies, "What we want, is for you to do your job and convict him. If you can't do that, we'll find someone who will." The prosecutor replies, "This is a courtesy meeting, not a strategy session. I am charging Baltar, with what I can prove. Of course, I serve at the pleasure of the president and if SHE decides to replace me, I'm sure there are other lawyers willing to take up the case. If there ARE any other lawyers.", as she confidently leaves the room.

...

I've looked at the show promos, etc. and haven't found a youtube clip of this. Anyone else out there have one? Perhaps Alberto Gonzales and Bushco really are Cylons!

1. I noticed that too
Has to be coincidence, I know these shows have to be shot more in advance than a few weeks...

2. Maybe the show developers knows something we don't! :)

And it's actually been over two months now since the Carol Lam story came out that started up this controversy (January 12th). Of course it hasn't gotten headline status until the last month or so. Perhaps the writers were really tuned into this at the start, though I remember when I first saw the story then and posted it here, I didn't really think it would grow to the stage it has now then either. Perhaps they really do have a vision on the future of humankind's fate! :) It will be interesting to see the season finale soon! I wonder what other "deft" analogies are in place for that then!

3. Looks like the phrase was on West Wing a whole lot
*shrug* Any BSG writers do West Wing? It wouldn't surprise me if they are inspired by it given all of the political episodes lately and the pacing.

4. It wold be kind of a cool "part 2" to Daily Show's clip to piece these together...
... and roll them into one big video clip! It will get it so people HATE this line! I'm already hating it as something that doesn't reflect democratic principles!
